Golf with· the stars in La Vegas! California, Northern California and Nevada competed in five two-day events to determine the best each class had to offer. Kevin Abernathy from the Sierra Chapter completed an injuryfree, consistent season to earn the title of National Beginner Champion. Keith Mansfield from Reno, Nevada, rode the last event with a broken sternum and ribs to secure the National Championship Novice title over David Cooley from the Northern Chapter. Dave Harrel, President of the Sierra Chapter, rode his RMl25 to consistent finishes throughout the year to capture the title of National Intermediate Champion, and, from the Northern Chapter, Greg Albin overcame a tough last round to capture the title of National Expert Champion. In the Pro Class, Mark White from the Southern Chapter battled with pros from all chapters to secure the title of National Pro Champion. Summerville was the fmal round of the series and the second half of a double-header weekend that began at Southern National Speedway in Kenly, North Carolina, the night before. However, it was Steve Morehead with the holeshot as Will Davis and Dave CamJin emerged from the pack out of turn two in second and third, respectively. Pegram got by Camlin to join Morehead and Davis in a close three-rider race. Davis edged by Morehead at the halfway point and pulled away, leaving Morehead and Pegram to fight for second.place while Camlin and Hacker were in a dose race for fourth. Pegram lost his brakes with two laps to go forcing him to back out of his battle with Morehead and settle for third. And not only did he win round seven of the series at Southern National Speedway in Kenly, North Carolina, he was also the event promoter. After talking with severa] area race tracks and local business leaders, Davis decided to follow a recent trend of Grand National Series competitors by promoting his own event. His name and MARS number-one plate turned out to be a sizable draw as faithful spectators braved threatening rain clouds and a tornado watch to see an uninterrupted evening of great racing. Davis announced with jubilation after winning the main event and collecting S2000 in purse and lap money that "the event wouJd de6ni~y run again next year. As Davis celebrated, F&:S's Harley-Davidson's Steve Morehead joked after his secondplace finish, "I must be the only promoter who can't win my own race," he said, referring to his fifth-place finish at Eldora Speedway in September.
