Woods tough at GFTL ST By John Blackstock CARNESVlU.E, GA, NOV. 5 The final round of the GfTL short track series at the Carnesville Karting Komplex had both something new and something old. The old part was the weather which, as at almost every other round of the series this season, threatened to force the racing to be stopped. Fortunately the really foul weather eventually abated, and those who hung on through the rain and sleet were treated to something new as Virginia resident Travis Wl)Ods and his son Aaron topped a few classes in their first visit to the series. The older Woods rode a neat-looking DTXstyle Husky to a convincing win in the 251-500 class, then returned to fight to a second-place finish in the Semi Pro trophy class. Woods' son Aaron made a real impression on the locals in the 50cc 7-S-year-<>ld dass as he blasted around the track to greet the checkered flag first. The Woodses' performance was especially impressive by virtue of the fact that this was their debut ride and most of the competition they faced had been competing in the series all year. ln other action, Chase Pickren took full advantage of a couple of no--shows to walk away with the 200cc-dass win. Bruce Dexter and joe Sabin had a nice battle for second with Dexter edging Sabin and Rick Matheny at the finish. An added attraction for the season finale was a Women's race. It was quite a show with young Merritt Johnson riding her KXBO to victory, despite a displacement disadvantage, over Melanie Keith, Phyllis Barnett and Amy Weaver, all of whom were riding XR200 Hondas. a Results 50 (4-6): 1.
