I···EVE~TS emerged several spots down the ladder. Levesque then started picking his way back through the pack and caught back up to McCann. The next several laps saw the pair wage their own private battle. As the pair entered the bog with two laps to go, McCann became stuck in the deep muck and Levesque picked the better line. Levesque moved into second for the final two laps. McCann managed to salvage a fourth out of his ride despite the fact that he would get stuck in the mud on every lap. Fifth place went to Robert Speroni after battling for the entire race with Dave Gunn,. who pitted at the end of the fifth lap. Speroni passed him in the pits for the fifth position. Results Abbott bounces back at Rocky Ridge Cross Country Yamaha-mounted Dana Wright came through with the win In the Over 30 Expert class at the Rocky Ridge Cross Country. By Darryl Smith ERA, TX, OCT. 8 Mike Abbott needed a little four-stroke seat time in preparation for the Baja 1000, so he raced a Honda XR600 at the 14th round of the Texas Cross Country series at Rocky Ridge. From all indications, Abbott adjusted easily from his usual WR2S0 mount as he landed the AA Expert-class win. Abbott's ride started out badly with a firstturn crash, but he quickly turned' it around and had passed five riders by the first checkpoint. Continuing his charge~ Abbott then moved by Bobby Southard in the rocky woods to pull in behind second-placed Darryl Smith. . Holeshot man Tom Robinson was out of sight and would avoid being challenged by Abbott - for a while - as Abbott spent the next two miles banging bars with Smith. Eventually, Smith missed a dogleg in a patch of trees and Abbott was away dean to loo'k for the leader. Early into lap two the hard-charging Abbott found Robinson and took the lead for good, at which point the top two positions were set. While the racing at the front might have been over, fourth-placed Bobby Southard wasn't done as he made a last-lap charge on his KTM to pass Smith using a longer-but-faster line through a turn in the rocky woods section. Smith chased Southard the last few miles as they raced wheel-to-wheel, but Southard kept his cool and didn't make any mistakes to earn third place on the day ahead of Smith. David Culpepper erased a two-m:inute deficit to finish fifth after fouling a plug on the starting line. Results AA EXPERT: 1. Mike Abbott (Yam): 2. Tom Robinson (Suz); 3. Bobby Southard (KTM); 4. Johnson untouchable at Clarkie's Mild Ride HS Riders honored at Speedway Banquet By Cindy Lemere By Elaine Jones ASSONET, MA, ocr. 15 Team Green motocrosser Keith Johnson put in a surprise appearance at the 15th round of the NETRA Hare Scramble Series in Assonet and came away as the overall winner in the AA .. class. Cris Crispin got the holeshot followed closely by last year's grand champion Scott Phelps, Todd Levesque, Johnson and Dave Gunn. As the quintet moved into the woods, Phelps moved into the lead, went down hard and was immediately overtaken by the rest of the pack. Crispin, now back in the lead, was overtaken by Johnson seconds later and Johnson would remain in the lead until the very end. Johnson would end up finishing almost five minutes"in front of the nearest rider. Crispin tried to keep up Johnson'S pace, but as the pair entered the notorious "Mudbog," Crispin discovered that he had more problems then just battling his way through the muck and roots as his throttle was stuck wide open. The next several laps saw Crispin fighting to keep his bike under control as his throttle would intermittently stick. He finally ended lip pulling over to fix it and gave up two slots to Randy McCann and Levesque. With the throttle repaired, Crispin quickly caught back up to McCann and dogged him for a lap. As the pair re-entered the bog, McCann picked a bad line and was quickly swallowed up in a deep, murky rut. Crispin passed McCann and slipped into third where he would remain until the finish. Runner-up honors for the day went to Levesque after he worked his way back from several bad crashes. Right after Phelps' get-off on the first lap, Levesque also crashed hard and RIVERSIDE, CA, OCT. 28 For the second year in a row, the Hicks and Russell families opened their homes so that the Southern California speedway community could honor its own. The festivities were dampened with the announcement of the unexpected passing of Marilynn Oxley, wife of International Speedway promoter Harry Oxley and mother of Brad and Laurie Oxley. Speedway is a family, and all in speedway wish Godspeed to Marilynn and condolences to the Oxley family. ' Leach, Olsen top at Salein AX By Clay Light SALEM, OR, ocr. 28 Ryan Leach, who is making a successful comeback bid after a near-career-ending back injury, rode two impressive 250cc Pro-class motos to score the overall win during round four of the Oregon State Championship series at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. . Fellow Honda rider Shawn Highland made the lengthy trek up from Medford pay of! by "running away with the first 2S0cc Pro moto, while Ryan Leach moved up two positions in the mota by first overtaking Ryan Terlecki, then gelting past a fallen Roby Leach to trail Highland to the finish. Mota two, however, wasn't as memorable for Highland as the tallest rider on the AMA National circuit tangled with Kawasaki rider Jeremy. Harwood in the early portions of the race and couldn't recover i.n time for a win. Ryan Leach rode a rampant pace to collect the win, good for a 2-1 overall win. Terlecki, Vfho won the 12Scc Pro class, capped off a great evening with second ahead of Highland. Husaberg-mounted Kenny Olsen got a lucky break when Roby Leach jumped the gate in the first Open Pro moto and breezed to a win In the class after Leach was penalized. The second outing had Olsen and Leach stage a classic showdown. Olsen survived several close calls, the most memorable being his one-hander off the triple jump while leading. "I had it wide open over the triple jumps," said Olsen of his late-race attempts at holding Leach back. "I just barely saved it." Leach made one last attempt at overtaking Olsen but instead ended up crashing. Top Amateur honors in the class went to Mike Storm, who trailed the Pro duo across the finish to beat Paul Meusling.
