The Rninbow II Cycle Park was a new venue for
the fourth round of the Over The Hill Gang
alional Championship Series as some of the
best veteran riders on the West Coast gathered
to do battle for two days.
.
Of 311 the classes in the format, few could
match the racing excitement of the Novices as
Dan Smith put together four moto wins to capture the overall victory. The reaJ racing, however, was for the second through fifth positions.
Going into Sunday's race it looked like Dave
Cooley would continue with his consistent sec·
ond-place finishes l but a nasty soil sample on
lap three put him at the back of the pack. Also in
the running were Pat Cocagne, Jon Marshall,
Jarvis Gross and Mike Villa. With all these guys
only a couple of points apart, it was anyone's
guess as to who would prevail.
Smith holeshot moto one and sailed away
unscathed as Gross, Marshall, Cooley and
Wayne Matheny rounded out the top five at the
end of the first lap. Gross and Marshall duked it
out for aU of the next two laps until Marshall put
a move on Gross for second. Gary Arnold, who
had moved up from a poor start, saw the opportunity when Marshall got by Gross and sneaked
in to take over third. By the end of lap four,
Arnold was pounding on the rear fender of Marshall until the pressure got to be too intense, and
Arnold moved into second. Gross put on a lastmmute charge to get by Marshall, but time ran
out and he had to settle for a well-deserved
fourth. Pat Cocagne was fifth.
Down, but not out, Gross rocketed to the
lead as the gate dropped for moto two, leaving
Smith, Marshall, Dave Cooley and Arnold to
fight for second place. Marshall grabbed a handful of throttle, passed Smith, and started moving
in on Gross for the lead. When the two leaders
came together on lap four, Smith made his move
and took off for the checkers. Arnold managed
to get by Cross on lap five. The moto ended with
Smith taking the win followed by Arnold. Mar·
shall, Gross and Cocagne.
