Utzig scores at Prairie City RR By Ken Callahan Photo by Rose Rush U") 0\ 0\ r-i trl N I-< III .g .... o U 38 SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 17 Bruce Utzig claimed his second win in two outings during the eighth round of the 1995 CMRRA Championship Series at the Prairie City OHV road course. Supersport superpower Ken Takeda got the holeshot to lead the field into tum one. Utzig quickly closed in behind the hard-charging Takeda to measure his opponenfs strengths and weaknesses for the first lap around Prairie Oty's Perimeter course. Both riders swept through tum four immediately establishing a small gap on the field and serving notice that this would be a two-rider battle for the lead. Driving hard into the corkscrew, Utzig made his first probe to Takeda's defenses with an inside move. Takeda shut the door and denied Utzig the pass. As both riders swept through the final chicane before the straight away, Utzig mounted his second attack with an early drive and drafted Takeda down the straight. Moving up through Takeda's sUpstream, Utzig realized that he had the momentum to carry himself past the leader and slipped to the inside of fast· approaching turn one to seal his bid for the lead. Takeda attempted to repel Utzig's pass by driving deep into tum one on an outside line, but could not head off Utzig in the horseshoe. Utzig dashed througb the stadium chicane with Takeda glued to his tail sectiol' planning to avenge Utzig's turn-one pass. For three laps, Takeda stayed in touch with Utzig and planned a counterattack that would develop in the later stages of the race. Utzig was aware of Takeda's presence and turned up the heat. His lap times plummeted as he ran full bore to clear himself from Takeda's grasp, and within three laps he established a two-bike-Iength lead that he would hold to the finish. While heading down the straightaway on the seventh lap, Takeda took a quick look back to assure himself that third-placed Tim Rush was not threatening, and settled for a secure second. Brian Harp held down fourth ahead of Art Martinez. Results STK: 1. Toby Jorgenson (Yam); 2. Ken Takeda (Yam); 3. Pheng (Yam);'" TlRl Rush (Yam); 5. Michael lynn (Yam). SS· 1. Broce Utrig (Yam); 2. Sothl~ Jasso Storms To Horn Rapids Motocross Wins By Larry Trevino RICHLAND, WA SEPT. 17, 1995 Rolul lasso ran two practically flawless motos en route to winning the 12Sec Beginner clas and went 4-1 to take the overall win in the Combined Beginner class at Hom Rolpids ORV Park. In moto one of the l2Scc class, lasso took his Yamaha to an impressive holeshot as he started at the very end of the gate, then turned flat tracker and went wide in tum one and never looked back. Honda's Eric Loomis, Kawasaki's Kevin Searl, and Lance Hilker on his Suzuki followed. As Jasso was running away with the race Loomis and Searl were battling for second. On lap th.ree Searl secured second. Loomis held on for third as Hilker finished fourth. Moto two saw Loomis taking the holeshot over Jasso, Hilker, and Honda's Larry Trevino. For the first two laps all four kep pace with each other as they battled through the whoops and jumps of the sandy track. On lap three lasso took the iead and rode to an eight-second win over Loomis. Hilker and Trevino were a close third and fourth. In moto one of the Combined class Oregon's Cory Hardy took his Honda to the win, but not before a crash that took out the leaders. Second and third went to Honda's Matthew Sakach and Ryan Helms, and fourth went to a hard-charging Raul Jasso. . Moto two saw lasso do the same thing as he ctid in the 125cc class, going wide in tum one and saying goodbye to the rest of the field. The 80 BEG 1. Tim Kaun(Yam);2. By Donna Hall LOD~ CA, OCT. 1 Rob Damron and the Hart brothers, Don and Danny, proved they were up to the challenge of a double header - IT and short track - at Lodi's Cycle Bowl. The Open Money Race saw Damron take a wire-to-wire win while Danny Hart and Don Hart took second and third. The Hart boys tried every line they could but failed to find a way around Damron. The Short Track Pro-Am Expert race was a replay of the IT, but with a swap of the brothers: Don Hart was second while Danny was third. Lodi day races are notorious for the dry, slick conditions that exist and many found that the ride was much different than a niglit race. The racing was certainly different, but very interesting. The Open Novice Short Track was one of the largest races of the day, having two heat races. The victor of the main, with a great holeshot, was Richard Gillian. Hotly contested was the race for second. Coming from sixth to finish sec· ond was Yuniko HiTao. Rick Garcia made it a bit difficult for Hirao, but H.irao prevailed and took second while Garcia was third. Vet Expert Main belonged to Matt Gomez, and it was a much-needed win for this racer. Bob McDonnell was second and Dan Feldhaus third. . Short Track Vintage Novices saw Billy Hiles put his front wheel to the white line for the first tim.e ever. Hiles will campaign a 25-year-old 250cc Champion-framed Yamaha. He didn't win but he sure tried. The win went to Aaron Osco on a 250cc Kawasaki. Steve Hall did his hole hot-runaway business in the Open B IT, a wire-to-wire win for Hall on a 450cc Honda. Results PRO-AM EX: 1. Justin Ownbey (Yarn). PR().AM NOV~ 1. Larry And (Ra); 2.
