Rusty Holland (86) nells down the
holeshot In the first 250cc Pro moto
during the third round of the GFI Reclng
North Fell Series at Sandhill Rench. Scott
Myers (98) we. the overall winner.
Birkel-Back started the first moto with a
bang, taking the holeshot and never looking
back. ShOwing his better experience he created
some early distance on the pack, and had time to
style and nac-nac. David Hicks grabbed the allimportant second position in the race, which put
him in first on the scoreboard. Tony Wright
grabbed third and pressured Hicks for second.
By the third lap Birkel-Back had put a la-second lead on the pack. The real race was for second as Wright continued to challenge Hicks at
every opportunity. Hicks got a little out of shape
and let Wright get up beside him. Further back,
Jimmy Spiers decided it was time for a little
action of his own. By the white-flag lap, he made
his move on Jay Blanchard to move up to fourth.
It looked as though he had the position when
the two touched and Spiers went down. He
managed to pick it up and finished fifth behind
Jay.
Up front, Birkel-Back took the win while
Hicks held on for second with Wright still
knocking on his back door.
In moto two Hicks took the holeshot followed by Blanchard. Birkel-Back was stuck back
in third. Tony Wright stalled his mount in the
first corner and had to begin the race in last.
Hicks tretched his lead out early; perhaps just
knowing that Birkel-Back was somewhere in the
pack behind gave him the incentive to try for as
much of a lead as possible in an effort to hold
him off, But Birkel-Back was extremely fast
through the whoop section. On a short section of
about eight whoops he'd only touch about two
of them giving him such an advantage that he
got around Blanchard for second. Birkel-Back
then caught up to Hicks to challenge for the
lead.
The two ran handlebar-ta-handlebar into the
next straightaway. Hicks held on for as long as
he could but no one could match Birkel-Back
through the oncoming whoop section. But since
Birkel-Back was not scored, Hicks took the overall win in the 250cc Intermediate class.

Abbott runs down AA Experts
at Dry Valley Cross Country
the AA Expert lead. Darryl Smith chose to jump
into the water hole at the third turn, passing
David Gamer and Mike Abbott as they swung
wide to avoid it. After the woods section,
Nielsen passed Culpepper down a fifth-gear
straightaway. Smith also passed Culpepper
moments later when he chose the~alternate
around the moon rocks. Nielsen pulled just out
of Smith's sight, while Abbott climbed to third
by the end of lap one.
Near the halfway mark, the Rogers Yamaha/IT-backed Abbott began to close in on Smith.
Abbott outbraked Smith before entering the barrels at the end of lap number three to m6ve into
second. Smith dropped off the pace with some
blown fork seals and blistered hands but held on
to finish third. Abbott continued his charge,
passing Nielsen on lap four. Abbott was not able
to shake Nielsen and rode the final lap with the
Yamaha rider in his shadow. Nielsen gave it
everything he had but could not retake the lead.
Abbott took the checkers with inches to spare
over ie1sen.
