.' Gardner, Lynch retain Cal State Sidecar C'ship By Elaine Jones COSTAMESA, CA, SEPT. 23 Dirk Gardner and Doug Lynch successfully. defended their title at the Mission Yamaha California State Speedway Sidecar Championships at Costa Mesa Speedway. Prior to the event, the duo felt confident that they would keep their title for the 1996 season, citing that the key to winning would be at the starting gate. They also said that they believed their biggest competition would come from the Peter Lewis/jamie Macy team and the "Thunder &om Down Under" pairing of Dean Steele and Dwayne King. But before the races even started Steele and King were having some serious problems getting their Godden-powered sidecar started. Their first race told the tale as their engine went south before one lap was in the books. Gardner and Lynch won the race easily. Lewis and Macy were a different story as they scored a wire-ta-wire victory in their opening ride to remain tied with Gardner and Lynch after the opening round, making them the oddson favorites to wrestle the title away. Gardner and Lynch were up against the Mission Yamaha team of Matherson and Leeder inround two. Matherson and Leeder got the holeshot at the start, but Gardner and Lunch were pu tting a lot of ponies to the ground and took the lead by the second lap, never to look back. But Lewis and Macy answered the challenge with another wire-to-wire win in their second-round heat ra,ce to remain on the lead pace. In rou1')d three, Gardner and Lynch were up first, and this time it was Don Partain and Derrick Albright a~ well as Steve Morrow and Craig Maggin who got a taste of the defending champ's dust. Lewis and Macy again answered in kind as they topped Matherson and Leeder along with the team of Ian Stewart and Boo Mixon. . Heading into round four, the two teams were perfect on the evening, and fans were starting to speculate about a possible runoff for the championship after both teams came through the round to remain perfect. But it aU came down to the second heat in round five when the teams would meet head on to decide the tille. Both teams loaded into the gate, and when the tape came up it was Gardner and Lynch who cut the best gate with Lewis and Macy rubbing on them through the first turn. But disaster struck on the second lap as the teams headed into turn two when Lewis and Macy overturned and ended up in the infield. Gardner and Lynch continued on in the lead and took the win to retain the State Championship. Lewis and Macy would still wind up second overall, with Matherson and Leeder defeating Partain and Albright in a runoff for third overall Rlltsults a/A: I. D. Curdner/D. Lynch (Kaw); 2. P. Lewis/J. It's Goynes at Spring Valley MX By Terry and Christie Fleming CLYDE, TX, SEPT. 17 Duane Goynes piloted his Honda to z pair of first-place finishes for the overall win in the 250cc Novice class at the Spring Valley MX facility. As the riders lined up at the gate, the 125cc Intermediate Kawasaki of Zeke Daugherty lined up late to run with the 250cc riders as he was the only 12Scc lntermediate on hand. At the drop of the gate, Goynes took the early lead followed by Tim McAngus. John Sharp and Daugherty battled early for third. Daugherty took third and went for more while Goynes extended his lead as the pack moved into the long straightaway with three sets of doubles. Daugherty was fast through the doubles and passed McAngus to take second by the end of lap one. Goynes then got out of shape in a tum anq allowed Daugherty to make up some time. Daugherty out· cornered Duane to take the lead but came up short on a double jump to give it right back. Goynes went on to take the win for the 2SOcc Novice while Daugherty got the 12Scc Intermediate win because the classes were scored separately. . Moto number two w'as almost an instant replay as Goynes took the holeshot and Daugherty fought &om third to second. This left John Willis in third, McAngus in fourth and Tony Poor in fifth. Goynes, still having trouble with the first left tum after the finish line, gave up the lead to Daugherty at the beginning of lap num- fd~edby EVENTS Scott Rousseau ber two. Early into the second lap, McAngus made a bid for third, leaping past Willis off a large hill and then cutting him off in the followitig right-hand tum. Up front, Daugherty went on to finish first followed by Goynes. However, Sharp wasn't through racing as he challenged McAngus for third. Determination paid off and Sharp edged out McAngus for the third spot. Results 250 NOV: 1. Duane Goynes (Hon); 2. Tim McAngus (Yam); 3. John Sharp (Hon); 4. Tony Poor (Kaw); S. Top finishers from each division after the first moto of racing would transfer to the contingency division for their·second moto. Racers would carry the points earned from the first moto into the final. Tarantino's first moto started out well, after he pulled the holeshot on his NCY-prepared Yamaha. Things seemed to get better for Tarantino as he extended his lead over Kenny Miller, who had obviously left his race gear at home as he was competing in a baggy pair of Levis and some worn-out tennis shoes. But near the end of the race, things became much more complicated for Tarantino. First he became trapped behind a crowd of lapped riders, then his rear tire went flat. And then out of the comer of his eye he saw Miller - baggy jeans and all - sailing over an SO-foot double jump that only the top pros were jumping. Somehow Tarantino kept it all together to post the moto wln over Miller, Mark Tilley; Ray Bowers and birthday boy Jason Abbott. Tarantino would have to face off against division-one winner Jerry Aleman and the rest of the finalists in the all-important second moto. When the gate fell, [iri Dostal and Doug Parsons led the charge into turn one aboard their Suzukis. Dostal, who suffered oumerous problems in the first moto, had a point to prove after a disappointing ninth-place finish in moto one. Dostal did not disappoint and quickly extended his lead over Parsons who soon came under attack from teenage sensation Jerry Aleman. Back in eighth, Tarantino was making up for a bad start by slicing and dicing his way through the field. Aleman moved to second and set out after Dostal, but all eyes turned to Tarantino, who was without a doubt the fastest rider on the track. Tarantino made short work of both Josh Warner and Parsons to take over third then kicked it up another notch and passed Aleman for second before sucking up almost all of Dostal's lead on the final lap only to miss picking him off at the checkered flag by just an inch. When the dust settled it was Tarantino with the overall victory via a ]-2 finish which topped Aleman's 1-3 and Parsons' 2-4. Results 50 (4.fl) STK: 1. Jeff Alessi (LEM); 2. Ryan McClintock (KTM); 3. Ingrande grand at Barona Oaks Motocross By Homer Eubanks RAMONA, CA, SEPT. 24 Angelo Ingrande stole the 12Scc Pro limelight from Gabe Bolivar during round 15 of the CMMC Barona Oaks Raceway MX series by racing to the class victory. In the first moto, Bolivar snatched the lead &om lngrande, who had corne off the gate first. Once out front, Bolivar kept lngrande at bay to capture the win. Ingrande found himself behind Bolivar when the second gate dropped. During the first three' laps, lngrand~ was all bver Bolivar like white on rice but couldn't find a way around until midway through the fourth lap. Ingrande outdjstanced Bolivar over the step-up in order to set him up for the following comer. Once around, [ngrande was able to put some distance between himself and Bolivar to take the overall. 11 turned out to be a 2-1 day for other overall winners as well. Brandon Vielguth got off the gate in fifth place in the 125cc Beginner first' moto. He hooked up with Jon Meyers, and the two worked their way to the front of the pack. However, at the checkered Vie)guth was still behind Meyers. In the follOWing mota another poor start - sixth - made Vielguth work for the Jirl Dostal (21) and Josh Tarantino (56) battled for supremacy in the 125cc Intermediate class during round two of the GFI Fall MX Series at Perris Raceway.
