PARK HILLS, MO, ocr. 1
had Busenbark plowed through
the thick dust and the famous
(
water crossings to capture the
overall honors at the Flat River Grand
Prix.
The 13th Annual event, also known
as the Gale Halbrook Memorial Race,
was a 20-mile course laid out in the St.
Joe State Park, where the 366 competitors would race for over three hours.
As the lead pack funneled through
the tight trees, kicking up huge douds
of dust, the riders had to hang back and
pick their way through the brown muck.
After the first lap, Steve Leivan came
through first followed by Leigh Letellier, Chris Thiele, Busenbark and Allen
Haynes.
During the second go around, however, Leivan missed a turn while
attempting to pass lapped riders, which
gave Busenbark - who had worked his
way into second - all the room he needed to take over the lead.
Letellier eventually moved into second and would give Busenbark nothing
but trouble for the next two laps. Fortu-
