Burton doubles at Arbuckle Speedway By Nicalee Sowders WOODFORD, OK, AUG. 26 Casey Burton was the winner of both the 250cc Amateur and Open Amateur classes at Arbuckle Speedway. The likable Texan also had the fastest heat races in both dasses. In the 250cc Amateur class, Burton got the holeshot but Ray Arnold was there to gi"e chase for ·the top position. The third-place battle was between Mark Witham and Pete Gaither. At the checkered flag it was Burton, Arnold, and Wjtham one, two, three. In the Open Amateur class, it was again all Burton who got off the line first to lead the pack into tum one. Behind Burton the battle for second raged between Chuck Bachman and Arnold, with Da"id Hidden joining the fray. When the checkers flew, however, it was first place to Burton, second place to Bachman and third to Arnold after the late charge from Hidden. The BOcc class required a restart after Bret Sowders crashed out. Michael Hom then got the holes hot and Justin Arnold and Sowders followed into turn one. As Arnold and Sowders battled each other, Hom just kept pulling away. After halfway, Hom checked out and Sowders nearly lost his third-place run to local rider zach Massey, but at the finish line it was Hom in first, Arnold in second and third to Sowders. Holland best at Trans-Cal MX By Joan Tlearney CARSON CITY, NY, SEPT. 10 Rusty Holland won the 125cc Pro-class overall at the CMC Trans-Cal MX National round one at Sil"er St.,te Raceway, which hosted 320 riders. The Clawson's/Pro Circuit/Cherokee Powdercoat/Suzuki-mounted Holland holeshot the first 125cc Pro race along with Lowell Moural Jr. and Donald Upton. Heading down the first hill, the pack wound into the tight, off-camber turns and technical whoop sections. Upton took o"er the lead when Holland went down in the big sweeper in the back section. but only for a brief moment as Ryan Huffman sneaked into the lead. Spud Walters ran in third while Scott Sheak, Anthony Pocorobba, Justin Tiearney and Chris Wheeler continued to pick off riders. Waters pulled off the track after crashing out while Holland and Sheak continued thei.r charge after going down in the whoop section. The first two laps were wild and the lead was up for grabs. Huffman took advantage of the situation and pulled out ahead taking the lead from Upton. Huffman and Upton dazzled the crowd jumping the huge triple-stepdown jump and getting big air. Pocorobba and Tiearney battled for the fourth position and were catching the leaders. Holland was making up incredible time and passing e"erything in his path after his fall. Chris Wheeler suffered a broken chain with a few laps to go and disappointedly pushed his bike back to the pi ts. On the white flag, Huffman had a comfortable lead, and when th~ checkered flew, Huffman was the winner followed by Holland, Upton, Pocorobba and Tieamey. The moto-two holeshot would go to Tiearney. Holland ran in second and Huffman in third. The youngster held off Holland, Huffman and Sheak for several laps. Huffman then crashed, handing over third position to a confident Sheak. In a matter of seconds the Suzuki of Sheak had railed past the front-runners. The battle continued for second place with Upton falling off the pace of Tieamey and Holland. Pocorobba had his troubles, crashing after landing on the backside of the 6O-foot tabletop with his foot under his peg, possibly breaking an ankle. At the checkered flag it was all Sheak, who worked for this win. Holland would land second while Tieamey was an impressive third. Holland got the o"erall win with Sheak settling for second. Upton took third o"erall and Tiearney was fourth overall. Results 50 P/W (4-6): 1. RYilIl Ferris (Yam); 2. Bryan Perry (KTM); 3. Kyle StambacJc (KTM); 4. Larry Azevedo (KTM); 5. Smulders on fire at Altalan ST By Phil McDowell LAKE MlLLS, Wl, SEPT. 9 Ten-year-old Tyler Smulders was the only rider of the eveIring to collect two first-place trophies during short track competition at the Aztalan Cycle Park. The little speedster collected wins in the 60cc class and the SOec Junior class_ The wins probably locked him in as the class champion in the 80ec Junior class, but because of races missed early in the season due to his foot injury, Smulders will be forced to settle for second in the 60cc class. Both of Smulders' wins went relatively unchallenged on the track. Young America/ Mike's Cycle's Jesse Janisch finished second and Jordan Jones third in the 60cc class while Ste"en Moss and Bradley Routheaux followed Smulders across in the 80cc Junior final. During the SOOcc final, Steve Forrest, Da"id Cartwright, and Kye Ybema put on an excellent display of tight racing throughout the entire race from which Forrest emerged the victor, with heat-race winner Cartwright narrowly getting the better of Ybema at the end for second place. In the Pro/ Am ranks, Brad Rosine took the win in the 250cc class. The action was behind Rosine though, as Mark Kornely, Young America/Horsepower by Stan's Brian Kromroy, and George Istvanek mixed it up. At the end it was Rosine with a comfortable lead o"er the duo of Komely and Kromroy, followed by a frustrated lstvanek whose repeated outside-pass attempts came up empty. Ybema won the 600cc Pro/ Am final in his usual fashion, followed by Donald Waldbuesser and Kornely. Results 250 PRO-AM: 1. Brad Rosine (Kaw); 2. Mark Komely (Yam); 3. Brian Kromroy (Yam); 4. Humphreys humbles 500s at Mosier Valley Motocross By Harvey Mushman EULESS, TX, AUG. 20 Intense battles were fought over big bucks and championship titles at the Progressi"e Suspension-sponsored Southwest/Texas $5,000 Fall Championship Series at Mosier Valley MX Park. Rick Humphreys put his Husky out front in the first comer of the first moto in the 125/50Occ Combined class. A rough, race-long battle for second was fought among Paul Burnett, Lawrence Lucia and Joe Newmann, with Bur· nett taking the runner-up spot. The second 125/5OOcc moto had Humphreys (Top) Kenny Lash (14) leads the 125cc Pro field, Including eventual class winner Rusty Holland (86), Into turn one at Sliver State Raceway during round one of the CMC Trans-Cal Natlonllis. At the flag, Burnett again had his 125cc singing into second place. The first O"er 30/ O"er 40 Combined moto was the one to watch. Bobby Gulbean had his Bullaco out front and into the first comer, but Humphreys was by before the first lap was o"er. Soon the rest of the Experts went by as Gulbean experienced bike troubles. Sean Knaack, Ron Munson, Bumett and P-Nut all went back and forth for second. At the flag, Knaack was followed by Burnett and Munson. The second O"er '30/0ver 40 moto had Knaack out front with Lucia, Munson and newcomer Mike Tilotta fighting for the lead. Knaack seemed to pull away and looked like he could go all the way. Then Humphreys got going and by the third lap had pulled behind Knaack. The Hump tried to stuff his way past Knaack and got a little close. Knaack let him by and settled for second. Munson was third. The first 250cc/Grand Prix moto had some real artillery in it. Ron Short and Dewitt Knox brought out some fine-looking Big Bore Maico's, and proceeded to show everyone the quick way around Mosier at lap times near the modem. bikes.
