Von Borstal bests Nelson
Ledges vintage
By Kyle B. Schalow
GARRETSVlLLE. OH. SEPT. 2
Steven Von Borstal flew his GPz 550 through
traffic and took the lead on the first lap of the
Vintage Six race, leaving the rest of the field
more than 10 seconds behind at Nelson Ledges
Road course.
After gaining the number~one position, the
Syracuse, New York, rider continued to charge.
Going into the second lap he closed the door on
the other riders leaving them without an opportunity to challenge for the position.
The dice for second place was a grueling battle among Donald Fine and his GS 500, Paul
Wilke with his VF 750 and Hans Peter Rasmussen on his Z·1..

Kawasaki-mounted Jeff Ryan is finishing out the
1995 season with a bang aboard his KXl00.
Ryan took double-class wins at round 13 of
the lS-event MegaSeries; nailing down the
Super Mini and Schoolboy crowns.
A field of 460, up from 1994's race, came to
Muddy Creek Raceway to contest the AMA
Yamaha Fall Oassic.
•
Ryan earned his two victories by producing
four perfect motos. 1n Super Mini, Ryan checked
out and left the battle for runner-up to Team
Green's Joshua Summey, Yamaha·mounted
Jered Black, Junior Mini winner Ben Riddle and
Casey Barnes. The only one of those four with
consistent placings was Barnes, in fifth; the other
three overall positions turned out to be Black (32) in second, Summey (2-4) in third and Riddle
(4-3) in fourth.
Ryan's rides in Schoolboy were even more
impressive, pitting the KXI00 against mostly
125s. Ryan headed the field of IS, including
Matt Eason, Paul Justus, Brad Edwards and
Joshua Capps.
Although he qualified for Loretta Lynn's
aboard a KX8O, Ryan has grown so fast that he
could no longer ride it safely. He was second in
MegaSeries points in Senior Mini, but his move
up leaves the door open for Hans Neel and
Daniel Tesh to try to catch points leader Aaron

Hedden does it again
at Vallejo Speedway
By III. Sober
VALLEJO, CA. SEPT. 2
Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden won the points race
and the track championship at the Auburn Gold
Country Fairgrounds in the spring and early
summer, and showed no sign of letting up in
this late summer Speedway race held at the
Vallejo Sports Arena at the Solano County Fairgrounds. Hedden took the wire-to-wire win in
the Scratch main as well as a close third-place
finj h in the six-man Handicap main. Vance Felicia was the man in front of the Handicap main.,
wiruting for the first time in the 1995 season.
Hedden lined up in gate three for the Scratch
main, with surprise entry Glenn Moore to his left
in lane two and Bart Bast on the pole. VallejO
points leader Jimmy Sisemore was at Hedden's
right elbow on the outside ne"t to the retaining
wall. Hedden and Bast got the first jump as the
race began. with Bart slightly ahead on the inside
line and Hedden coming around the outside. Sisemore made quick work of Moore, takin.g over
third place as the field blasted down the back
straight for the first time. Before the first lap was
in the books, Hedden had gotten "JOUnd Bart and
was setting a pace that would take him to the
checkered flag unmolested. Sisemore drove hard
on the inside but could not dislodge Bart from the
second-place money. Moore rounded out the field
in fourth place with the best seat in the house.
In the Handicap main Vance Felicia used
mistakes by 1Q-yard starters Ian Ferris and then
Glenn Moore to take the win at the wire ahead
of second-place Moore and 50-yard starter
Bobby Hedden.
Vance, who started the main on the 2Q-yard
marker, first moved past Ferris on lap two and
then followed Moore for three laps before pushing into the lead as the white flag was ready to
unfurl. Moore managed to get back in tine
before the back-yardage trio of Hedden, Sise·
more and Bast could overtake him. As the final
lap progressed, the fast riders from the back of
the pack dosed in but ran out of time, taking
third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Welch wins two at
Nelsons Ledges Vintage
By Wm. A. lIIurer
WARREN, OH, SEPT. 2
The vintage r.acing action at Nelsons Ledges
Road Course was marked by protests, a red flag.
and fierce competition.
The Vintage One race saw Billl Alston lead·
ing the pack on his Honda 350 with racing newcomer Larry Skiver close behind in second on
his Suzuki X6. Ray Carter Sr. took third.
Vintage Four shared the track with the Vintage One bikes. Once again, Vintage Four would
prove to be a hotbed of action both on and off
the track. Todd Welch blistered the track and
won going away on his Triumph 650. Mike
Lighton screamed to second on his very quick
Yamaha RZ350, while George'Mood placed
third. Originally, Bob Weber scored second on
his Ascot-motored bike; but was protested
because of the bike's newer 250 Ninja chassis.
After much debate the protest was upheld and
Weber's bike was disqualified.
The second vintage race saw the Vintage
Two and Vintage Five bikes take the track. The
race was red-flagged in lap four because of a
blown engine and a complete restart was
ordered. Vintage Two rider Bill Burger, who
was leading the first race on his Yamaha RS,
was unable to get the bike restarted and that
left Bob Gerberich and Bill Murar to fight it out.
Gerberich led from flag to flag with Murar hot
on the Honda 450's tailpipes but unable to get
around as he almost pitched his R5 Yamaha in
tum four while in pursuit. Ray Carter Sr. hung
on for his second third-place finish of the day.
Another protest was voiced as to one rider's
use of disc brakes in a drum-brake class, but
the protest was filed too late and was dis·
missed.
Vintage Five was dominated by Jake Coye
on his very fast Kawasaki 1075 with Seven von
Borstel finishing second on another Kawasaki,
this one a 55OGPZ. Donald Fine on a Suzuki 500
Twin was thjrd. The third and final protest of
the day was filed on a Vintage Five rider who
supposedly entered an illegal bike in Vintage
Five. Once again the protest was fiJed too late
and was dismissed.
The final vintage race of the day was the
Vintage Three/Vintoge Six race. Vintage Three
saw Todd Welch, the day's only repeat winner,
flash to Victory on hjs Triumph, followed by
speedy Pete Smakula's 650 Yamaha Twin. Chris
Riley, riding a very quick RD350, rode to third.
Vintage Six was won by Steven von BorsteI followed by Don Fine, both whom were bumped
up from Vintage Five. Paul Wilke on a Honda
Interceptor was third.

Old Town Motocross
By Rupert F Pellett
FRANKFORT, OR SEP. 2
The KX bucks were flying as a huge throng of
Kawasaki-mounted hopefuls raced for their
share of the contingency money at this southcentral Ohio motocross park.
Sunny weather and fine track conditions
were the rule at this scenic circuit; located in a
park setting. just outside of downtown Frankfort. Race promoter Jeff Kellis poured huge
amounts of water on the track, as this area has
had little precipitation lately, and the facility
was in fine form come race time.
J.D. Collins was off to a good start in the first
