Califorria Tr.' Rides Presents the 6th ·Amla' catching him, so 1 made sure 1 stayed with him." Rider entries for the event, which has long doubled as the Darrell Davis Memorial race, were numbered at 80 35 Experts and 45 Pro-Am - a number tha t incl uded both 600 and 250cc . entrants. Qualifying was kicked off by what would be a preview of the main event. Stanley and Kopp had a heated battle in the first of four Expert heat races which saw Stanley score a narrow win ahead of Kopp with Don Wilson third. Heat two placed Jeff Annen. Mickey Fay and Rex Fisher into the final. . Hometown hero J.P. Simonsen won the third heat ahead of Russ Yamamoto and Oregon's Jeff Harsha. The final three direct tickets went to Del Schnitzer, Eli Price and Shane Butchart. Two semis placed the winner of each into the main event. Winners were Ron Waters and Ryan Anderson. For the first time this season at Castle Rock; a 250cc Pro-Am class was added to the program. Local Kawasaki rider Todd Hagmann rode superbly to overtake early leader Dave Stering and hold the lead for the dura tion. Californian Jeff Gabhart and Spokane's Steve Smith were second and third, repectively. Smith sat on the pole position for the 600cc Pro-Am main event, but Californian Don Hart pushed to the head of the pack and stayed there to the end. The unfortunate Smith had been caught in traffic and spent most of the race playing catch-up, and by the time he made it to third place - where he would finish Hart and Patterson were well out front and in no danger of being overtaken. Christian Vernon, Bob Moran and Stering rounded out the top six. Of the 14 riders making the Expert main event, 11 held National numbers, including pole-sitter Stanley. To no one's surprise, Stanley shot to the front of the field right off the line with Kopp, Annen, Simonsen and Fay in hot pursuit. Stanley was a man with a mission, not wanting to see his win streak end, as was Kopp, who badly wanted to gun down Stanley. As Stanley and Kopp increased their lead, a three-way battle for third was waged between Annen, Fay and Simonsen until Simonsen crashed. This allowed Annen an opportunity to work on getting away from Fay. He eventually did to ride a lonely third late in the race. Up front things got more dramatic as the number of remaning laps dwindled. With two laps to go, Kopp rode high on the groove and was back on the gas faster than Stanley coming out of the dogleg. As a result, Kopp was able to get a wheel underneath Stanley to grab a last-lap lead, one he would maintain to the finish. A stunned Stanley finished secona with Annen, Fay and Fisher (who came from last place) rounding out the top five. "1 just couldn't ride like 1 usually did," said a dejected Stanley, who clinched th.e track championship one week earlier. "It was just too close." a Dual Sport Jamboree An AMA 0-37 Dual Sport Adventure starting in the Barton Flats area of the San Bernardino National Forest. 6th <..A:vl.V\uaQ ~ Sunday, Oct. 1, 1995 "ST"t_1 I o U • b Open to street Legal Dual Sport Bikes Only. ~ Spark Arrestor Required.
