That locomotive worked. She don't
sound good, but she rolls, don't she? I
need to go buy a lottery ticket."

(Above) Steve Morehead (42) not only
raced at Eldora, he promoted the event
too. Morehead claimed fifth place and a
moral victory as well

Roeder was unhurt, and he made the
restart, but he also changed the complexion of the race from a 25-1ap Grand
National to a six-lap "Dash for Cash."
Davis was' happy to get another
chance.
"I hate to see someone fall down like
that," Davis said, "But it gave us a shot.
I thought that I could win it off the
restart."

Parker was in command on the single-file restart, and he headed back to
the top while Davis pointed his machine
toward the bottom, gambling on the
hope that he would be able to slide up
in front of Parker.
"I thought that was going to be my
only chance to pass him," Davis said.
"Then Carr put a first-class slide job on
me."
Davis rolled snake eyes and would
ultimately pay an even bigger price as
Carr zapped him in tum three and tried
to grab Parker's coatttails. Davis was
securely in third place ahead of Springsteen 'and Morehead. King, Hacker,
Beattie, Jones and Kqelsch rounded out
the top 10 with Beattie giving all the riders in that pack a scare after he slammed
most of the hay bales in turns one and
two late' in the race and somehow managed to stay upright. Atherton pulled
off with more mechanical ills and would
be credited with a disappointing 16th
place, sandwiched between TCR teammates Brow and Butler,
The remaining five laps were the
fastest of the race as the two factory riders pulled away from Davis, posting
unofficial lap times in the low 19,6-sec'ond range along the way. And Carr
appeared to be faster, running one unofficial 19.59 as he caught up to Parker just
two laps from the finish. C"rr then
attempted to set Parker up off the last
comer and dived low in an effort to run
it underneath the leader. The two carne
off the final turn side by side as the
crowd carne to its feet.
"I had to bury it so far in there that I
lost my drive on the last lap," Carr said.
And just as Carr lost traction, Parker
found his and squirted down the front
straight to win by two bike lengths - a
margin that belied the reality of a close
finish.
"He surprised me the last lap," Parker said. "I looked back and I.had a little
bit on him. On the last lap he made a bit
of ground, and it was gonna be a race.
