filled grounds to a cheering roar in
approval of the 800cc-class start. Fowler's
first showy ride was clocked at 12.900 seconds. The West Virginian was unable to
stay on the bucking beast in round two,
getting a distance of 355 feet; Fowler finished ninth on his first-round time..
Rodney Williams brought his Niles,
Minnesota-based Harley to the starting
box ready to go and clicked off an excellent ride with an 11.3417-second blast.
With the homework done and no
changes needed to the bike or riding
techniques, Williams put together a second, improved run and bested his time
with a 9.8395. The smiling third-place
finisher commented, "The first part of
the hill, I felt like 1 was getting thrown
around side to side, but when 1 got
down here 1 was in some of the dips
they had in the hill. 1 didn't even notice
the scariest part of the hill, 1 just flew
through there."
Lou Gerencer Jr. got onto the hill in a
blaze, only to get bucked off just short of
the timing lights. The showy dismount
was a result of a kiCk from the monstrous Harley out to the left. It gained
traction and shot out from under Gerencer like a missile, and the projectile
landed on two hill workers on the opposite side of the hill. Fortunately, the two
only suffered a few bruises.
.
Steve Dresser of the Columbus, Ohiobased USA Pro Team seized the
moment and shoved a 9:9305 ride in,
knowing Gerencer would be back in
round two with an improved ride.
Dresser and Gerencer would produce
the only times under nine seconds in the
second half of the day. Gerencer's return
was, as predicted, an improved time,.the
run producing an 8.9184-second time,
only eight thousandths of a second
faster then Steve Dresser's second, nearly perfect climb. The ruthless points battle remains tight with Dresser leading
with U1 and Gerencer just behind with
119. "I thought the first run was fas.ter
until 1crashed," said a smiling Gerencer
about his crash and second winning
ride. "I just couldn't believe it when
they told me the time on the second
run." The day's win puts a fifth national
victory in the Gerencer's Pro Hillclimb
Team's trophy room.
" As soon as 1 got it straightened out,
1 got it dialed right in and the bike just
took off," a giddy and pumped up
Dresser remarked. "it was close to Lou's
time and it's going to be a run for the
championship."
