A brief rain fell before mota two and
changed the track conditions. Mercill again got
the holeshot followed by Padelford as Atkinson
went a little wide in turn one but recovered in
third. Atkinson quickly made up for his mistake
in the whoop section as he blasted by Padelford
and Mercill to take the lead. The moto-two outcome was a carbon copy of moto one as Atkinson took an easy win with MerciU second, fol·
lowed by Ludescher, Padelford, Sjorgren, and
Alexander.

Mike Atkinson was by far the dominant rider of
the day, scoring relatively easy wins in both the
125 and 250cc A classes aboard his Trackside
Racing/Glen's Sport Center-backed Yamahas.
Atkinson clearly won all four motos he entered
as the A classes were run with the B and C riders due to low A-class turnout.
At the start of the first combined
25Occ/Open A-B- mota, A-class rider Jay Mercill shot to the lead in front of Atkinson, C-class
rider Dana Alexander and B-class rider Matt
Ludescher. About halfway through lap one,
Atkinson put a pass on Mercill that would last
to the finish of the five-lap race.
By the end of lap two, a tight battle had
developed between Alexander, Ludescher and
C-c1ass rider Eric Padelford. On lap three,
however, Alexander faded back as Padelford
and Shane Sjorgren both got around. At the
finish it was Atkinson way out front, followed
by Mercill, Ludescher and C-dass riders

Neese back for Birch
Creek Motocross win
By Jay and Sharon Hauser
DANVILLE, VA, AUG. 20
Jim Neese has again proven to be North Carolina's second-fastest motocross competitor,
behind only Damon Bradshaw.
Since picking up a ride out of Jim's Motorcycle Sales in Johnson, Tennessee, Neese has not
failed to put his Honda out front.
After not riding for over a month due to a
back injury, Neese was not up to top speed at
Birch Creek, but he was clearly the class of the
250cc A division at the Birch Creek Motorsports
Complex, taking both motos for the overall vic-
