You know the Series... was straight off the track and into the hay bales!" Curry held second for about half the race before Stephenson found his way into the amateur champion's shadow. Their ba ttle for second was brief, as Curry suffered the misfortune of a flat tire and drifted back through the field. That left Palmer and Stephenson to mix it up for the $2000 prize. Stephenson closed the gap on Palmer, but never found room to attempt a pass and followed Palmer across the finish line by just a few feet. "I didn't know who'was back there. 1 was just trying to drive my corners harder and do everything right," said 23-year-old Palmer. "I wanted to get a good lead and pull away, kind of like Yezek did in the 125 so 1 could cruise around the last couple of laps and maybe style a little bit for the crowd. It didn't pan out that way because Denny did a pretty good job of sticking with me." "I came up the start hill about second-to-last and then I had to go from there," said Stephenson. "I got through the pack all right and caught Cliff about midway through. 1 had a couple of opportunities to get him but 1 didn't capitalize. Later on, 1 made some mistakes and just didn't have any more time to pass him. He rode a good race and 1just wasn't able to pass him." While most eyes were focused on the battle up front, Carsten mounted a furious comeback and worked his way into fourth behind Maine's Mike Treadwell by the time the 20-minute main event ended. "The crash made me mad because 1 was riding real good," said Carsten. "After 1 got up, 1 knew it was a long moto so 1 just took my time and tried to pass as many people as 1 could. 1 ended up fourth, so that's nelt too bad." "The track is like one long whoop section the whole way around," said Travis Pastrana, who pretty much demolished the 85cc (7-11) field. "I got a good start alongside Gene Stull, and then 1 just tried to ride smooth and enjoy the track." Part of Pastrana's self-entertainment session inel uded his new no-hands, nofeet jump where he completely lets go of the bike and briefly floats behind it spread-eagle before pulling it in just before landing. "I really don't have a name for that jump but 1 guess you could call it a 'nothing:" said Pastrana of his unique leap. "I've never seen anyone else do it yet. It's pretty fun." Pastrana did the trick lap after lap as he pulled out a sizable lead on up-and-coming Pennsylvanian Gene Stull, who claimed the 65cc (1D-11) AMA National Championship at Loretta Lynn's earlier this month. Michigan's Nick Adams, who finished third in Tennessee in the younger 65cc age group, also finished third in the RM Challenge. ...~ /UNPTf\~ PRESENTS... .The 14th Annual CMC Trans-Cal @i MX Nationals . Davey Yezek; 2. Tony Lorusso; 3. .(0 Round . #, -The Astrodome - HOUSTON, TEXAS ('302Fj The course? Supercross 101. The classroom? The Houston Astrodome, home of Major League Baseball's Astros and the National Football League's Oilers. The teachars? Professors Jeremy McGrath and Damon Huffman. , For the seventh time in 1995, Team Honda/1-800·COLLECrs McGrath held a riding clinic for 19 of his favorite pupils and proceeded to school them allan the finar points of indoor speed. Rather than the same ai' holeshot & hide lecture, the theme 01 this week's lesson was patience. McGrath shadowed Jeff Emlg of the Yamaha fraternity for six full laps before demonstrating a textbook fakeout and sneaking into the lead. As usual, once McGrath inherited the point, the rest were left to take mental notes. Though Emig dropped some nine seconds back by the finish, he did manage to hold off Kawasaki teammates Mike laRocco and Mike Kiedrowski, who finished third and fourth, respectively, a few seconds further back. And the lesson was the same for the underclassmen, as Suzuki's Huffman romped to his fifth win of the season in the combined Eastern and Western Regional 125cc Supercross main event. Great racing, great camera angles, great interviews all make for an exceptional race at the Astrodome in this 47-minute show from Motovideol 33
