and Brad Oxley. The Wild Card slot went to Don
Odom.
Oxley drew the pole with Venegas in the second slot. Odom was in the center, with Finch
and Lucero to the outside. The race got under
way with a fairly even start and the pack
entered the first tum as a tight group. By the end
of lap one, Venegas and Oxley were running in
close succes ion, followed by Lucero in third.
The leader would not remain so for long, however, as Venegas went out on the dirt on lap two
and would be passed by both Oxley and Lucero
(riding the low line) before the face was over.
Oxley held on and met the checkers first, with
Lucero, Venegas, Odom and Finch· after a firstlap crash - rounding out the field.
The Handicap main was marked by a number of new faces. From the low yardage Joe
Erhardt led the first lap, with Jake Zemke in his
first Handicap main running second. Lance King
started on the forty-yard line but was on the
move and only used one lap to move into second place. Quickly upon the leader, King pressured the hard-riding Erhardt for five Laps
before finally making the pa s. The race unraveled on the sixth lap with multiple cra hes, and
because more than half the race had been run,
the contest was declared over. The win went to
King with Lucero second, Northrup third and
Erhardt fourth.

STITT doubleheader
By Clay Light
STURGIS, SO, AUG. 8
Cousins Joe and Lonny Kopp topped the Professional race action during Tuesday's AMA
doubleheader at the Jackpine Gypsies clubgrounds, day two of the week-long festivities
hosted by the club.
Joe Kopp, the national number-43-plate
holder, won the TT portion, while Lonny,
national number 81, won the evening's Short
Tra,ck Expert event.
Rotax-mounted Charlie Brown led the
Expert TT main, but Joe Kopp, fresh off his
impressive performance at the Peoria National
TT, railed past Brown to take the lead. Next to
pass Brown was Arkansas' Marc Gifford. Joe
Kopp motored away with an easy win ahead of
Gifford while Brown took an off-course excursion that allowed both Russ Yamamoto and
Lonny Kopp to take third and fourth, respectively. Brown netted fifth ahead of Dale Jenneman.
The best racing came during the short track
program. Steve Mayfield, Corey Brink,
Yamamoto and Lonny Kopp were heat-race
winners. Rex Fisher barely edged out Kenny
Coolbeth Jr. for a win in the first semi while Eli
Price bested Steve Hyson in semi two. Lonny
Kopp sat the pole position for the 12-rider, 20lap Expert main event, using it to his advantage
by motoring into the lead foIlowed by
Yamamoto, Brink, Mayfield and Coolbeth.
Lonny Kopp jumped out into an immediate
and permanent lead while Brink got around
Yamamoto and Mayfield to settle into second.
Joe Kopp followed Brink through traffic, but
catching Lonny Kopp was next to impossible.
Joe Kopp eventually got around Brink to make
it a sweep of Washington riders as Lonny Kopp
took the checkered flag for the win.
