Reeds romp at Bear Creek short track By Kevin George CANroN, OH, JULY 29 The Reed Family held a reunion of sorts ~th three of the four flat track feature wins going to members of the Reed family, James Reed winning the Open Division, brother Dan Reed winning the Ute class, and Dan's son James (named after his racing uncle) topping the Youth class. The younger James got things started for the family when he challenged a tough field of Yamahas on his Suzuki SOcc. Reed came wide out of turn four, but with enough momentum to pass Stephen Hayes at the checkered flag. The 125 class also sa w a tw'n-four pass fOT the win when Jessie Hodges got on the gas too soon in turn four and found the back wheel passing the front. Second-place rider Brad Wale slowed to watch, and Josh Falb took the opportunity to pass them both. Dan Reed was challenged by Tom Hodges, who hounded Reed through both heats and went to the main determined to find a way to pass rum. It was not to be, however, for Reed kept a solid, low line and Hodges lost second to Bobby Peters on the Jastlap. The family feud went into the Heavy Division class as Larry Hodges pursued the elder James Reed, who pulled the holeshot and kept Hodges to the outside. As Reed took the win and Hodges fmished in second, Dan Reed held off Tom Hodges to finish in third. Pat Reynolds was the king of Speedway action, taking two heat wins and the scratch main win. John Busier finished in second with John Massie in third. In handicap action, Nick Hummel took the win, Shane Goodnight and Pat Reynolds finishing second and third, respectively. R_uIls YTli: I. Maxam, Riddle win at Daniel Boone motocross By Kathy Smith WNDON, KY,jULY22 James Maxam won the Over 30 class while Ben Riddle topped the Schoolboy class in round ten at the Daniel Boone Motocross Park in London, Kentucky. During the second lap of the first Over 30 moto, Eric Gill made a pass on leader Steve Jacobs and moved into first place, but held the lead only until the third lap, when challenged by Maxam. Maxam and Gill raced side by side to the finish-line jump, Maxam managing to pass Gill on the final jump and maintain the lead for the remainder of the race. The finish of moto two was a carbon copy of mota one, with Maxam, Gill a.nd Jacobs finishing in first, second, and third, respectively, each rider also taking the overall win in his finishing position. . In moto one of the Schoolboy class, the battle for first position raged betwee.n Chad Burba and Ben Riddle, the two riders ball1ing side by side as they jumped through the doubles with Riddle taking the lead as they flew through the rocket pocket. Burba was unable to get around Riddle for the remainder of the race, and had to settle for second to Riddle's win. Burba took the early lead in moto two of the Schoolboy class, Riddle following in second position. The Kawasaki rider led comfortably for three laps, but R;ddle closed the gap on th·e fourth as they negotiated the whoops and supercross doubles. Riddle conlinued to reel in Burba throughout the fifth lap, and by lap six the riders were wheel"to-wheel as they battled through the rocket pocket. Riddle passed Burba on the last lap of the race, Burba missing a gear as he rode through the whoops. Riddle took ad.vantage of the opportunity to pull ahead, racing on to place first for the overall win. Burba finished second, also claiming second overall. Results 50 (4-6): l. Price diced with Mike Hacker for the heat-race win, then grabbed the holeshot in the main only to lose it to Keith Jacobson early on. Price managed to regain first, but a restart (due to another rider's crash) gave him an even larger lead as he jumped out in front and maintained a cushion of almost four bike lengths over Jacobson, not letting off until he had crossed the finish line. 'The track was great, said Price. '''The racing was awesome. Me and my teammate Keith (Jacobson) had a great battle." Moroney's Harley Davidson/Spectro/Power Mist/Motion Pro/ AFAM-sponsored Price is currently third in the 883 points standings. In the 600cc Pro Class, Ken Coolbeth took over Roger Durkee's holeshotlead just after the first lap and kept a comfortable lead for his eventual win. '1 took third off the line, got around Roger, and just split!" said Coolbelh. Hacker battled with Stephen Beattie in the 7SOcc Pro class, the two riders swapping the lead, charging hard into the banked comers on a high line. Hacker won, Beattie took second and Geoffrey Dark earned third. ff Results 250 PRO AM: 1. A. Paul Lynch {Hon}: 2. Shawn Mobley (lion); 3. Bob Weis5 (Hon); '" Jdf Earl; s. Andy SopIIni Brown, Moran bum Castle Rock TT By Clay Ught CASTLE R()(J(, W JULY 28 A, Rotax-mounted Charlie Brown and Yamaha rider Bob Moran were winners in the Professional classes during District 'lJ AMA IT action at the Castle Rock Fairgrounds. Brown bested the Expert main event, while Moran worked his way through the pack to pick up a win in the Pro-Am main event. The Pro-Am class continued to be more competitive with each event. One rider, Randy Patterson, dominated the first half of the season, but recently there have been several new winners. Another top contender, Bruce Series, won the first of two Pro-Am heat races. The second went to Josh Currey, who edged out Moran at the finish for a win. In the 12-rider, IS-lap Pro-Am final, Yamaha rider Steve Pruczinski led the opening-lap parade, followed by Mark Studebaker and SerIes. Moran came from mldpack and rode a rampant pace to pick off numerous riders, charging into second by lap five. Moran picked off Pruczinski on lap six and opened up a big lead, one he would maintain to the finish. Meanwhile, the race was called to a stop when class series front-runner Series crashed off the jump and was seriously injured. Second went Pruczinski's way, followed by Studebaker, Frank Marker, Currey and Christian Vernon. Charlie Brown's second win of the season here came much Like his first· without Dan Stanley on hand. Brown, though, was on the gas and held off ational Number 37 J.P. Simonsen's challenges all of the way until the last lap. That's when Simonsen fell trying to stick a wheel under the Dirt Track Chassis/Longview Honda/Lester's Auto/Ken's Car Quest/Opshalbacked Brown, who went on to win. With Simonsen's demise, Del Schnitzer netted second ahead of Chris Fitzhugh, Jerry Southworth and Richard Wall Simonsen remounted for sixth. Results EX: I.Charlie Brown (Rtx): 2.
