, the 1995 AMA 125cc National
Championship. Having signed a
contract with Team Kawasaki to
contest the '96 250cc National Championship Series, Hughes knows that this is
his last chance to earn a title in the
eighth-liter division, and is taking every
step to accomplish that goal.
Take Washougal, for instance. The
Team SplitFire/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider
showed up at Washougal MX Park on amateur
day in order to take a
few extra laps around
the track in hopes of
gaining that extra edge
needed to beat his
championship rivals.
The extra day spent at
the track must have
worked, as Hughes
emerged with a bit of
breathing room in the
series point standings
after the following day's
125cc National. Though
he didn't win a moto on
Sunday, he was cOnsisten t enough to pull
'away in the standings.
As for Hughes' amateur-day performance, he simply outclassed the rest of the 125cc pro field,
handily winning the opening moto by
nearly a full minute. However, Hughes
packed it in shortly after the first goround in order to conserve energy for
the National.

A whopping 1,333 entrants showed up

of the biggest in late AMA history. Two
