"Today in the heat race, I got my first
win under my belt. Now finishing second, I'm almost disappointed, but that's
the way it goes," Graef said.
The battle up front had left Nobles
behind and he, in turn, had left the rest
behind. Coping with the pain, he maintained a steady pace and finished a
steady third. Having been away from
the class for a little while, he found the
level of competition a surprise.
"The class has progressed a lot since I
left and it feels good to be back. It definitely keeps me on my toes as far as cornering speed and concentration, riding
these bikes," Nobles said. "It takes a little more muscle to fling this thing
around, it's kind of painful. I'm glad I
managed third place."
Conrad's Harley-Davidson's Darvin
Loyd had fifth until he dropped out on
the fourth lap, ceding the place to
Hutcheson, who would take the gift and
run with it to the end, Friberg leading
Hendricks, Evans, and Richie Morris to
the stripe.

I knew that our bikes are so equal and
we're so evenly matched that it's a drafting war. And the drafting on those bikes,
you can't explain it. It's not like any bike
I've ever ridden, because of no fairing or
aerodynamic assistance. Even though
we're not going 170, the draft is four
times as effective as on a superbike. So to
learn to play that draft and work it, like
Billy was saying to me, 'I would be right

he story of the EBC Brakes American Sportbike race begins and ends
with Russell Katzenberger. The
Hooksett Kawasaki rider from Tilton,
New Hampshire, took a flyer on the first
lap and pulled almost a se.cond a lap on
the rest of the field. At the end of the sixlap, 24-mile race he had 4.94 seconds in
hand and it would have been more if he
hadn't slowed on his final tour.
'1 wanted to get out front and hold a
pace. It was history from there," Katzenberger said in the winner's circle. "I kept
looking back and it was a great battle:'

I need to do that: I just laughed. I've
been doing that for five years."
Zampach did it well enough today to
post another win and the $1000 top
prize that went with it.
Lamb, like Nobles, was secure in his
spot from the early going, pulling out
some space on the field from the second
lap on. His fourth was never in question. The next spot was the one up for
grabs.
