Scott the one time. I just couldn't do
anything after that."
Varnes was forced to settle for
fourth, with Springsteen a short distance
back.
'1 was just right there, but I couldn't
do nothing with them," Springsteen
said. "1 thought I was going to catch
(Varnes), but I gained a little but jJ.lSt
couldn't do anything with him. I just
kind of held my own. The leaders never
really got that far away."
Once again overcoming a poor start,
The Moroney's H-D-supported Hacker
climbed to a ·sixth-place finish.
"I had ~ totally different line from
everybody else," Hacker said. "Our
lines would connect on the straightaway
and I'd.have to back off, but it was awesome. There was a lot of moisture in the
track as the night went on. It was fun to
ride. It seems like when I'm on the front
row, I'm a little off. Then when I'm fast I
end up on the back row."
King, who has been strong all year,
appeared to have the Missouri oval figured out early in the day but wound up
with a seventh-place finish.
"1 didn't get too bad a start from
the second row," King said. "Three
was real rough. I was just bouncing
all over. Early I was getting through
there real good, but in the National I
couldn't miss a hole. I just mellowed
out, then went backwards."
Total Control Racing teammates
Atherton and Butler ended up battling
over eighth with Atherton getting the
nod."

I screwed up the first lap, "Atherton
said. " I think I was first or second into
tum one, but I went to the high line and
it was too greasy. Then guys passed me
coming off the comer, and I ran up top
in three and four and a bunch of them
went by me again."
"We both got pinched off down in
turns one and two," Butler said. "The
high line, after they watered it, right off
the bat didn't work that well. It was real
slick, but I set my bike up to run up
there because I was having trouble on
the groove. About the tenth lap it started coming in and we started picking up
the pace. If there had been one more lap,
I think I could have got back by (Atherton). It was a lot of fun."
Last year's winner Jones cruised
home 10th.
"I had a back row start, but I didn't

move up front much," Jones said. "At
first I got by a couple of guys, but a couple got by me too. I think I started off
the first la p in tenth and finished the
race tenth. I wasn't pushing that hard. I
was sore and I wasn't as sure of·the
track. After I fell down, I dang sure
didn't want to fall down again, so I was
riding a little conservative."
