Mcilvaine kicked off the first 125cc moto with the lead as John Franco and Jerry Seip chased him into the Supercross section. Seip wasted no lime in passing John Franco to take over the second position. Brian Berry made a pass to drop Franco to fourth as Seip passed McIlvaine for the lead. Seip maintained a slim lead into the last lap while under continuous pressure from McIlvaine. Seip scored a narrow bike~length win with McIlvaine following closely in second as Franco reclaimed third to end moto one. Mcllvaine again jumped into the lead to start moto two, but Seip was on the gas and quickly took over first place. Franco and John Laurine chased the lead pair into the back sand section but were left behind when Seip and Mcllvaine picked up the pace. Mcllvalne stayed glued to the rear fender of Seip as the pair jumped side by side with Seip barely pulling ahead into the lead. Mcilvaine made his move in the back section of the final lap, jumping ahead as the two raced down the Spectator Straight. Seip trailed Mcllvalne through the final lap, and Mcllvaine finally daimed the moto and overall win. Sandzimier sails at Yamaha Dealer Series Motocross By Robert Van Damme SAN BERNARDINO, CA. JULY 2 Mark Sandzimier won the overall in the Veteran Beginner division at the third round of the Yamaha Dealer Series at Glen Helen Raceway. Sandzimier pulled the holeshot in the first moto and proceeded to huild on his lead. Behind him the battle for second place raged between John Messer and Mark Dewberry. Dewberry pursued Messer for two laps, then passed him as they made their way back into the scoring section. The leaders remained in place through the rest of the race, with Sandzimier finishing first followed by Dewberry in second place and Messer in third. Isaac Lopez got a m=endous jump on the By Michael Maher VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY 8 Steve Lucero pulled off the rare feat of winning both main events at Speedway USA, but his accom.plishment did not go unmarked as his Scratch main win was overshadowed by controversy. Lucero, Charlie Venegas, John Aden and Jim Estes made up the field for the Scratch main event, and as the fjeld moved into turn one in a tightly knit group, there was apparent contact between Lucero and Venegas, and Venegas went down, hringing out the red flag. Speedway rules state that if a solo crash causes a red. flag then the rider invoJved is omitted from the restart, a call that did not sit well with the crowd or with Venegas. But the race was restarted without Venegas, and the Tint Doctor/Oilzall/Arai-sponsored Lucero pulled out an easy victory over Estes and Aden. The Handicap main also starred Lucero and Venegas, but there was no controversy this time as Tony Wood took the early lead before Lucero and Venegas carved their way through the pack and emerged on Wood's tail with two laps to go. Wood then lost control and slid wide, allowing Lucero, Venegas, Jerry Black and John Aden to get past, and that was how they finished with Wood finally taking ·fifth place over Paul Colston. The Support class main saw Bill Green take the lead on the start and hold on all the way to win. Jeremy O'Neal led the Beginner main from wire to wire after being pressured early by Ben Mears. In Junior speedway competition, Jimmy Fishback Jr. won the First Division' main over Michael Hull, with Patrick Donovan taking the Second Division honors over Joey Draper and RObert Levandoski. Jesse Little out-dueled Justin Boyle and R.J. Weeks for the Third Division title.
