'1 saw the split sign too late," Wellenstein said. "I tried to roll back but my foot went down and I got a five." The Expert class was hotly contested as Beta Techno-mounted David Montgomery edged Tim Detwiler. It seemed as though Montgomery would clean one section while Detwiler would take a point or twol then the two would reverse scores on the next section. They were tied on the last loop when Montgomery cleaned section eight while Detwiler could manage no beller than a three. Jim Altemus, normally an excellent rider, saw a small rock tuck his front wheel under him on a downhill, and Altemus gave a demonstration of the lip dab - Ouch! Dave Rohrschneider on the Section One/Kirschner Products-backed Fantic Section lost a mere 46 points as he dominated. the Championship class on Sunday. Rohrschneider put on a superb display of trials riding when he registered the only clean of the day on section 13. Wellenstein continued his winning ways in the Intermediate class as he dropped only three points. Brad Villand moved himself up from Novice class to his first ride in Intermediate as he tied Robert Larson for second, but Larson took the bronze with 13 cleans to Villand's 11. Fisher reels one in at Cycleland Supercross By Rex Harris OlICO, CA, JUNE 30 Suzuki-mounted Jarred Fisher returned to Cycleland's Summer Supercross Series after taking a week off to race Mammoth Mountain and came a way wi tb the win in the 250cc main at round nine of the High Point Series. As the gate dropped for the 250cc main it was Tim Nobles grabbing the holeshot followed by Chris Verboom, J.R. Mason, Fisher, and Kurt Favre. Nobles continued to lead on the second go-round, but Fisher had begun his charge and smoked past ~ason in the long whoop section to t.,ke over fourth. Behind them, Mark Cooper moved past Favre into fifth. As the race wore on Nobles began to inch away from the dogfight behind him between Verboom and Fisher. At just past the halfway mark, Fisher pulled alongside of Verboom and dove under him to make a pass as they set u.p for Cycleland's huge triple. Once past Verboom. it took the Matson Racing/Pjl /Petrich Cycle/Roseville Suzuki-mounted Fisher less than a lap to run down Nobles, but getting by would be another matter. The two banged bars for two more laps before Fisher was able to get an inside line leading over the finish line tabletop and take the lead. Once in front, Fisher ran unchallenged to the checkers. At the finish, fisher, Nobles, Ve.rboom, Mason, and Cooper rounded out the top five. In Pee Wee action, KTM pilot Darren Nye continued his winning ways by making it three wins in a row after a rare-long duel with points rival Bradley Powell. Results P/W: I. DrIlrren N~ (Kl'M); 2. The cushion track, a favorite of many local riders, won the favor of not-50-local riders as well. Roger Durkee won the 600/750cc Expert class over Duane Veeder and Ben Bostrom, while in the 250 Pro-Am class feature, Shawn Mobley took the holeshot and ran away with the victory by about a quarter-track. Marco MerelJo was second while Michael Ourda was third. Local hotfoot Jim Myrick stole the show in the 600cc Pro--Am main event. Starting out in third place, he passed Morgan Coolbeth on the outside for second on the third lap, and at the halfway point he made the leap to first, staying about six bike lengths ahead of Bob Weiss for the rest of the race to take the win. It's Northrup at Cahokia Creek Hillclimb By Bud Northrup WHITE CITY, IL, JUNE 24 Jason Northrup proved once again you don't have to have the biggest motor to turn in the fastest time when he rode to the quick time of the day during his win of the 400cc class at the Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders hillclimb at the club's hill just outside of White Oty. Aboard his "Yamazukj" (a 1985 Suzuki RMl25 carrying a heavily modified 1977 Yamaha IT 400 engine - engine and frame modifications by Boonie Knoll), the 19-year-old Mahomet youth turned a fine 2.821-second run on his first ride to set a target for those in the big bore classes. It looked very much like the time would hold up through the first round as the 500's and 750's failed to best the time. But then in the Open class, Terry Bailey brought the crowd to its feet as he grabbed a handful of throttle on his big Harley and held it all the way to the top. The Harley flew high in the air past the lights, landing hard. Bailey incurred leg injuries serious enough to keep him from riding the second run, but his wild ride netted him a 2.765-second result, pulling him in first place in the Open Class and holding down the fast time of the night at half time. But Northrup responded on his second ride with a 2.716-second pass, moving him back onto the fast-time bubble. Now all he could do was wait as the bigger classes ran. In the 500cc class, John Scroggins came within six thousandths of a second of Northrup's time as he turned in a 2.722 second run. Then Tom Compton charged the hill with his ultra fast 1425 cc Kawasaki, nailing a 2.721-second run, good enough to take over the Open class lead, but five thous.1nd ths of a second slower than Northrup.
