Grant grand at Starwest MX By Tony Alesal PERRIS, CA,jUNE 25 Awesome" was the only word to describe the riding of eight-year-old Josh Grant in the 60cc (,. 8-year-old division during the final NMA Ponca Gty Qualifier held at Starwest Supercross Park. Grant looked like he was riding in a different time zone then the rest of the field during the opening moto. Grant pulled the holeshot then opened an over-twenty-second lead over Nevada-based Ty Morrow. Chris Nihan was on the gas but a late, rare mistake left him fourth in front of Dane Jackson and Cas Swift. Ty Morrow pulled the holeshot in the allimportant second moto but was no match for Grant, who promptly motored past him into the lead. As in the first moto, Grant left the others behind and went on for the victory. Chris Nihan charged hard all molo and pided up the third spot after a moto-Iong battle with 9-11 class winner Daniel Taft. Tenth annUlI Steve McQueen Memorial Vintage Motocross Nyblod, Price shred Eugene MX By Clay Ught EUGENE, OR, JUNE 25 allas Nyblod and Rick Price scored impressive victories at the fourth round of the AHRMA Western Regional Vintage Motocross Series, the Steve McQueen Memorial Vintage Motocross at Eugene Raceway Park. The event drew many Northwest riders, but an equal number of Californians made the trek north. Riders were also on hand from Nevada and Canada. One of the many close races occurred in the 250cc Expert class when Nyblod and Maico rider Greg Carter spent nearly the entire first moto glued together. Nyblod saw his lead evaporate as he missed a shift at the midway point, but Carter had the same woes a lap later, and Nyblod took it the remainder of the way for a win. Another of the many Maico riders on hand, George Gailing, placed third. Shawn Brown pushed his Hickman Montesa to the head of the pack in the D 36 second moto and made Nyblod work for the win. The two got too close and tangled, and when the dust cleared, Nyblod had the lead. Greg Blazek, riding a Honda, inherited second after Brown's demise and maintained it to the finish while Can-Am rider Monty Price trailed in for third in the moto and fourth overall. One of the day's largest classes was the 30+ Intermediate class. Maico rider Rick Price rode a marvelous opening moto where he fended off Jerry Ebert, Sam Hayes and Steve Bohacek. Ebert was hot on Price's heels but lost a shift lever on his CZ and dropped to third. Perhaps the gutsiest performance of the day belonged to Bohacek, who appeared to be on a stone-stock 1972 DT-l enduro. Bohacek challenged Price all the way to the finish but couldn't make a pass. Molo two was also Price's and was a near-repeat of the first as Bohacek pushed the Maico rider all the way to the finish. The Husky-mounted Waldron rode a quick enough pace to take- home third-place laurels with 5-3 placings. (N RNUItlI SOO EX: 1. Matt Soloman CHon); 2. Greg Carter (Mail; 3. George Goning (Mail; 4. Holeshot MX win to Smith By Mark Kromer LINESVJU.E, PA, JUNE 24 Jim Clark Jr. proved himself by fending off a determined Scott Smith in the 2SOcc Inlemlediate class for the overall win at Holeshot Raceway during the Competition Riders of Americasanctioned event. Due to an unusually light turnout of intermediate riders, the 2SOcc B ~ was forced to run with the Open BIC class for a total of 10 racers combined. In the first moto, Smith puJled a beautifuJly executed holeshot and ran a virtually uncontested race, finishing first, with Oark finishing a strong second. In the second moto, however, a two-man tangle in turn three on the first lap left Smith in trouble; Nate Glista loded horns with Smith while trying to make a pass. As they were untangling their bikes, GJista and Smith found themselves half a lap down with only seven remaining laps in which to catch the other riders. Oark found his way into the lead, but within three laps, Smith found himself halfway through the field, having already passed many highly skilled Open riders. In another three laps, Smith forced his way around all but Clark, who had a substantial lead on the rest of the pack. But the gap between the two riders shrank with every straight, and the race came down to the last straight before the finish. Clark was forced to talee the inside line through the last turn, (inding himseU unable to double the first two whoops Smith went high in the turn, successfully doubling and landing beside Clark. Through the short whoop-section, both riders were giving it their all, running neck and Graves again at Willow Springs Road Race By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND, CA,jUNE 17 -18 Chud Graves scored another Toyota Gold Cup Formula One race victory during the sixth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Ouh road racing at Willow Springs International Raceway. Curtis Adams, last month's F-l race victor, grabbed the holeshot off the line but Graves was all over Adams' rear lire by the first turn. Heading down the back straight on the first lap, Graves and Adams were side by side, but Adams managed to hold Graves off. Meanwhile, Walt Dorsch was riding in third and was suddenly nipping at the tail of Graves as the first lap ended. However, three turns later, Dorsch lost the front end on his motorcycle and crashed, removing him from contention. Rounding turn eight, .Graves got his Valvoline SuzuJci-sponsored Suzuki GSXRll00 past Adams to take the lead with third place now being held by Dean Vincent. By lap three, Paul Harrell had maneuvered through the pad after starling from the bad of the grid and was dicing with Vincent for third. Feeling the challenge from Harrell, Vincent twisted the throttle and in lap six these riders were challenging Adams for second. In the final few laps, a new challenger for second place emerged as Tokey Beck passed Vincent and Harren, but8eck's efforts proved in vain as he crashed on the last lap. At the line, it was Graves with an easy win followed by Adams in second and Vincent in third. JL.I: 1. Chuck Craves (Sw:); 2.C~ AdamI
