"Man I needed that," Hill said. "I hadn't even planned on riding tonight, but the chance came up to ride the Gardner Racing/Walters Bros. Rotax and I knew I needed some seat time so I said why not." Twenty-five expert riders from all over the country signed up for the Tote Gray Racing-promoted $5000 Pro-Am event on the fast highbanked quarter mile. The competition was so fierce that Dave Camlin was the only home-state Tider in the 12-rider main. Hill sat on the pole for the mam with J.P. Simonsen, Dan Stanley and Eli Price to his left. Jim Sumner joined Camlin on the front row. Simonsen holeshot the field and led Hill and Andy Tresser into turn one. Tresser used a great start to move from the second row to third place.
