Hughes hotat Perris MX

PERRIS, CA. JUNE 3

David Hughes was the top Intermediate rid er of
the day by posting an impressive double moto
sw ee p during the GFI Mammoth Mountain
warmup race at Perris Raceway.
An extend ed track and two 15-lap motos
would test the Pro /Intermediate riders' physical
condi tion ing an d ability to ride a long, rough
course.
Hughes was up to the task and breezed to a
double-moto romp of not only the 250cc intermediate class bu t the 12See Interm ed iate class as
well. Hughes topped Kelly Pichel and Paul
Kellen in the 250cc class, and Mike Battista and
Jay Grimm in the 125cc class .
Derrik Gibso n was untouchable in the SOcc
Beginner class an d soared to a pair of moto wins
in front of Robert Bland, Brad Hanenberg, lauren Perry an d Christian Polland .
John Sanders and Sha ne Bailey duked it out

The 0-200ee A class provided exci tem e n t
with youngsters Daniel Morrison and Jason
Greer dicing for the point positi on for the whole
race. After swapping positions frequently, Morrison came away with the class win, followed by
Gn...,. and David Ashley.
Tommy Handy d em on strated some strong
rid ing to th e win in the 250cc A class. Ha ndy
holesh ot the start and got off to an early lead
that he managed to maintain despite the efforts
of T unmy Mitchell and Mark Allman.
Off to the early lead in the (}o! 00cc class, John
New ell gave it his best sh ot in his effort for the
w in. bu t slow -s ta r te r (la st pla ce tjStep hen
Edmondson did so me hard riding and moved
through the pack quickly to pass the leader
before the end of the first lap. Edmondson rode
to victory in the class with john Newell Jr. carding S<.'COnd. Chance Baker, james Carr a nd joei
Bonanno rounded ou t the.top five.

Glen He le n Racewa y was the site of the firs t
round of the Yamaha Dealership Series and the
seco nd of the Block Bus ter Theater Series and
Clifford Jennings raced to the overall in Over
The Hill Gang's Novice Class,
When the gate dropped for the first moto,
the 25-rider field jammed into the first tu m with
David Ward leading the pack. War d was pursued by Dan Bernardino. Gary joala an d Greg
Williams.
While Ward extended his lead, Williams was
on the move and was ted no time getting aro und
[oa la for third pla ce an d then Berna rdino for second .
•
As the race wore-on, Williams had d osed to
wit hi n striking d istan ce of lead er Ward and
mad e his move. As the two rid ers rounded the
grandstand berm William s took the ou tside line
and stole t he lea d . Though hewould come
under slight pressu re, wh en it meant th e mos t
Williams wo uld lead the pa ck acros s the finish
line.
Back in th e ba ck, Wa rd fade d w hile jo ala
seemed to gain steam as the race wore on.
On the last lap, joala made the move when it
counted and passed Avedissian to finis h second
while Ward made a bid for third bu t couldn't
get around third-placed joala and would finish
fourth.
Greg Whi tfield was the holeshot artist in the
seco nd moto bu t Rob Ruder was hot on his heels
and passed Whi tfield before the end of the first
lap . Newcom er John Grise then began to pressure Whitfied.
FU'St-moto winner Williams had gone down
in the firs t turn and was charging franticall y in
an a ttem pt to salvage the overall.
On the fourth lap Grise caugh t and passed
Whi tfield and had Ruder in his sig hts. while
back in the pack Cliffo rd Jennings wo rked his
way.around Dan Bernardino after a slow start.
Grise fina lly found a way around Rud er to
take the po int , whi le je nnings got aro und Whitfield for third. The front- runners had settled into
their respective positions when th e white flag
fell with Grise taking first, then Rud er, Jennings,
Whitfield a nd johnson.
