la nd , th e fas tes t qualifier, wasted little time
moving to the front of the pack. Holland used an
open track and his ability to clea r the big air
d ouble to set the pace for the I S-lap main.
By lap four Ho lland w as followed by his
Cla wson teammates Pat Bennett, Jeff Pest an a,
and the rookie Nathan Wood s. These four riders
would form a train with Holland being the locomotiv e. By the ha lfw ay p oin t, H olland ha d
ope ned up abou t a six-second lead over Bennett,
who had a determined Pestana right on his rear
fend er. Not hav ing any luck sewing u p a pass
on the expe rienced Benne tt, Pestana >not wanting to let Holland get away - sailed over Bennett
on the big double in traffic and moved into second. Holland, in the mea ntime , wa s riding flawlessly and looked in total command of the race.

over Woods, w ho was ridi ng a solid fourth. Holland was now aware of Pesta na moving u p. And
with Pest ana d oing the big double, Holland 's
ad vantage was taken away. In the closing laps,
Holland contin ued to clear the do uble jump, but
Pestana was definitely faster through the rockers
and was closing the gap.
With two laps to go, Pestana lost tractio n on
the approach to the d ouble and had to take the
ju m ps one at a time, Holland, who took the
checkered flag. Pestana held on to take second
over Bennett . Woods was fourth, and rounding
out t he top five wa s Suzuki-mounted vetera n
ride r Jon Nelson.

ning the heat, Weaver also took a comm anding
lead at the start of this feature race. He was slowly being caught by cousin Garrett Weav er. On
the last lap, Brandon Weaver mad e a move for
the lead , but his Honda misfired and sent him to
a third-place finish behind Merritt Johnson .
Due to a successful AHRMA dirt track progra m in the area, the mod ern bike Open class
rolled. to the start line with a distinctive vintage
appea rance. Onl y the Yamaha 500 of Ken Lilly
and the Rotax rid den by Rick Weav er we ren' t
vintage lega l machines. Wh en th e gree n flag
d ropped, it wa s AHRMA champion John Blackstock with the lead on a Yamaha 750. Then came
Lilly and Weaver in hot pursuit. Lilly was pressing hard in every comer, trying to force a mistake that never came. At the chec kered flag, it
was Black sto ck ahea d of the So u th Carolina
rider by just inches.
