The site was Glen Helen OHV Park, and the attraction was old motorcycles in competiti on. The Ame rican Historic Racing Motorcy cl e Associ ati on (A H RMA ) sanctio ned the festivities, wh ich d rew 40 entries to the British Bike Magazine National Tri al on Saturday, and over 200 riders on Sunday for th e Vintage Iron N ational Motocross. Starman Productions ran a smoo th, well-organized trial on Saturday, round five of AHRMA's National series. Trialmast er '''Smili n' Jim " Cameron did a terrific job of giving riders a challenge, as th ere w ere virtually no tie sco res, and pl ent y of po in ts lost fro m tr icky (but safe) turns. Th e o nly ti e ca rne for th e win in Modern Classic Ad van ced , wh ere tw o riders each dropped 15 points. However , Baker sfield 's Barb ara Don Carlos piloted her Yamaha TY175 to the most cl ean s (26), four m ore th a n Alan McHugh, to earn the win. Three points back in third was Rob Bush, compe ting in his first-ever trial aboard a beautiful Bultaco Sherpa T. Th e ci ty of Bak ersfi eld g re w b y another trophy, courte sy of Steve Martin (Matchless), w ho shrugged off the distraction of scoring sectio n six fo r most of the day, then playing catch-up to win Pr em ier Heavyweight Exp er t. Ernie Stair was second in his first ride aboard a new sho rt-s tro ke 400cc AJS, while Pet e Ford took third wi th his BSA Gold Star . Englishman Sim on Ch en ey, so n of fa mous chassis build er ' Eric Ch eney, scored a couple fo r th e four-strokes wh en he ro cke ted to wins in 30+ Exp ert an d 500cc Exp ert aboa rd a trick Ch en ey BSA B50. Each moto showed the sheer power of the big thumper as the pack raced up the starting hill , with Ch eney inching away the entire di stan ce. In the 500cc Experts, Gr eg Carter (Ma ico 440) and Ariz ona' s Kevin Kru gh (H us ky) swa pped second- an d third -place finish es, with Carter earning the runnerup spot overall. There wa s a three-w ay tie for the ove rall in 30+ Exp ert; Chen ey' s 3-1 tally gave him the adva nt age over a pair of Hond a Elsinores piloted by John Greenway (2-2) and Ty Erqui aga 0 -3). An oth er double-class victo r with some serious horsep ower was Ch arli e Beck, riding a Maico with a new Steve Ad ams-built engine. Beck swe pt all four motos of the 40+ and 500cc Intermediate classes. Second in the 21-rider 500cc Interm ediate field was Jeff Mullins, followed by the Bult aco Pursa ng of Ed Lowenberg. Second spot in the over-40s went to Rich Smit h, w ith Bob Spic er third on his new Rickman BSA B50.
