Lap afte r lap he tried to edge insid e the American , bu t lap after lap the doo r was slammed resolutely shut. Finally at 20 minu tes Pa rker left a gap and the Husaberg was throu gh , but only for 50 ya rd s - at the ve ry next turn Pa rker slammed inside to reta ke the lead. "If I had tried to defend the line:' declared Srnets, "he would have hit my rear wheel and we would bo th have go ne do wn ." Ju st over a lap later th e race was thrown wide open. : " I knew I had a cha nce to get Parker on the insid e at the tight tum befo re the hill, and when he bogged in the berm r had it:' explained Smets later. . But Parker was not giving up, wo und up the KTM to screaming pitch and was actually reelin g in the big four-s tro ke up the long hill. " I missed a ge a r s hift a p p roac hi ng the jump:' claimed Smets, w ho nosedived in to the gro u nd a nd was then flung over the bars. The former cha mpion esca ped wi th nothing mo re serious than bruises as his bike hit the ground an d bounced righ t over him - somersaulting twice on the way. It could well have been the shock of seeing the tiny KTM coming bac k at him which caused the loss of concentration on Smets' part, bu t almost certainly the enorm ous jump which Parker made to retake the lead was responsible for his own d ramatic departure just over a lap later. Alread y b y the end of the la p Delepine had taken over th e lead and there was clearl y a sus pens ion problem. Over a ju m p halfway around the following lap , the factory Mar zocchi fork legs and front wheel simply dropped off the sliders on Parker's factory KTM. Parker escaped with pulled neck muscles. Martens was already out after touching Smets leavi ng the first tum. "I must have broken th e spokes there and they damaged th e front br ake line," said a disa ppo inted Martens. Delep in e held off everything King could throw at him to win the moto and overall, while Johan sson had to settle for third after twis ting the front forks when he ove rju mped . Young was all over Van Doo m for fourth until th e Dutchman clip ped the chain-link fencing and d ragged it across the track. "I was too close to miss it and go t tangl ed u p : ' said th e chagrined Young . "I was down to 14th by the time I go t loose ."
