The second moto was the highlight of
the European off-roa d season to date, as
Parker and Smets fought a tremendous
duel for the lead that ultimately left both
men on the ground an d out of the race.
Parker needed less than a lap to pass
the holeshotting John Van den Berk, but
Smets was not going to let his arch rival
gefaway and was hot on the KTM's rear
w hee l as they came through the finish
area .

them as they enthralled a crowd of 7000.
Jacky Martens repo rted back fo r
actio n with a pain-wracked fifth in the
opener, and Mike Young missed another top-fou r finis h wh en he got dra gged
down by dislod ged fencing in race two.

to hit th e grou nd in turn o ne of th e
open er as Merv yn Anstie sli t he re d
down in front of the pack, and a hectic
ride through the ranks followed for the
KTM star.
In 25th after a lap, Parker hit the top
10 at half-d istance . "It was real difficult
to make places on thi s slick surface,"
said Parker. "Some times I would dive
inside three at a time, bu t then the front
guy would lock up, I w ould run into
him and th e two others I just pa ssed
were back in front again. "
At 35 minutes Parker passed Young
for seven th and wi th three laps to go he
ripped past Fran co Rossi for six th. A
brave Martens would have been next. "I
would have needed one mor e lap: ' said
