Winecke was able to hold off Gates at the end, as the tw o we re very close, with Bense all by hi mself in thi rd and Mercill and Engst rom rounding out the top five. . At the start of mo to two, Engs trom used the power of his 500 Honda to ge t the holeshot with Mercill, Borne and Winecke traili ng. After the sand wash section, which was not too treacherous th is weekend , Engstrom, Bense, Gates and Winecke led the pack. By the end of the first lap Bense and Gates were close and alread y pu tlin g some ground between themselves and the rest of the field . On lap two Gates got by Bense in th e sand w as h a nd Wi necke go t ar ou nd Engstrom. On lap three the two excha nged posi tions again as Bense got by Gates. The last lap of an uphill section proved to be the decidi ng factor for the moto as Gates beat Bense to the top and eventua lly to the checkers . For the moto it was Gates followed by Bense, Winecke in third , Engstrom in fou rth, and Steve Krech rou nding out the top five. Gates jams to Spring Creek Motocross win By George Hodkinson Photos by Karen Hodkinson MlLLVIlLE,MN, MAY14 Bruce Gates piloted his Honda to the win in the 2SA+ class at Spring Creek, which is a class that is starting to fill up with local talent as a number of fast rid ers are meetin g the age requirem en t for the class. Rains the night before mad e practice and the opening motos a bit wet, bu t as the day wo re on the track became near perfect for the 480 entri es on hand . At the sta rt of the first mot o, l ay Mercill, Chad Winecke, Rus ty Sorenson , and Gates raced into the first turn. Winecke moved into the lead in the very next comer an d Gates we nt d own early into the first lap. At the end of lap one the orde r was Winecke, Mercill, Sorenson, and Bill Engstrom. By lap two , Gates had worked back up to third and got by Mercill for second as he stalled in a rutted comer. Merdll still remained in thir d . Eastern Pro-Am motocross Spring Series woul d not be entirely tru e. But to say that the Ans wer / Andrews Motorspo rts / WD-40 / Ha m merhea d Graph ics Acerbis /Ceet /Bell / Sco tt USA-backed Sh ip ley is a racer who wins with heart certainl y would be. Ship ley had to battle every inch of the way to take three class wins, and he did it by winning the motos that cou nted , mostly the second motos. Shipley had to de al wit h poin ts leader Rob McWhorter in the 250cc A Pro di vision and pos ted a strong second in the ftrst moto, only to come back and smoke mot o two for the overall. Shi p ley has also crea ted ne w rivalry wit h Bob Gerken in the Senior ranks . These two rid ers have go ne at it in all of the previous five rounds of the series, and toda y was no d ifferent.
