c~ $20,000 good with a one, an d he was matched only by his fellow Englishmen Graham Jarvis and Steve Colley, plus an on-form Spaniard Amos Bilbao. As the field moved into the forest for a new group of sections , which included one with a series of fresh climbs over tree roots and loose, steep ascents out of a river, saw Colomer give up his only five of the da y. Only seven,.o r eight riders got through the section at all, in fact, with Colley - blowing hot and cold as us ual - being best with a two. The five seemed to sting Col omer into real action, though, as he ripped through the rem aining seven sec tions with a mere five marks. No one coul d match this . Certainl y not Tarres , whose team was going fran tic as the World Champ cast away a furth er 18 points to ad d to the 16 alread y on his ca rd . As Tarr es signed off at the end of lap one, he was d own in an incredible seventh place. Colom er ought to have slep t pretty soundly with his nearest rivalsome nine marks adri ft. Behin d Lampkin, how ever, it was pr etty close as Ahvala, Bosis, Bilba o a nd Ja rv is were clo se behind . Jarvis in par ticu lar was hoping for an end to the bad luck that has dogg ed his series to da te. Being extremely quiet by na tu re, Jarvis - li ke Italia n Dona to Miglio - is often overlooked when a trial is in progress, and you only notice him when reading the results. Hoping to extract a few more marks, the FIM stewards alt ered several sections before Sunday. Amazingly, a nervous Colomer fived the opening section. The first five sections cost him 14 mar ks; and a fired-up Lamp kin was right on his tail wi th only six points lost thr ough the same haza rds . Lampkin's 22 for the loop was threatened on ly by a charging Tarres and an on-form Miglio. Also looking much better was 16-year-old Kenichi Kuroyama, who imp roved from a first lap 40 to a much better 27. Colomer recov ered to keep his lead, but it was still all to ride as the heavens opened up and torrential rai n made the sections imposs ible to ride. . Onl y the first an d fi nal se cti on remained possible, and both Ahvala and . Colley cele bra ted . wit h clea ns . Of the contenders, onl y Mig lio slipped up at the first, but at least cleaned the final hazard to keep him from his first-ever maximum lap at a World Round. As it all developed into a lottery, Colomer could thank his stars that he was in front when it mattered, as the final loop had little bearing on the overall resu lt. Both Lampkin and Tarres were chea ted by the weather, out of their chance of attacking the leader. The final leaderboard looked pretty much the same as it always does, with the exception of Spaniard Joan Pons, who was never in the hunt on his 330 Gas Gas . A 14th-place finish was a nightmare for Pons. And then there was Vukcevic, who was thankful to be in the wrong place - at the front - for once at the right time. cr Poli sh World Round Nowy Targ, Poland Results : May 27-28, 1995 CHAMPIONSHIP: I.
