Lanchy, Phelpstops at
NEDTSdirt track weekend
By Sabrina Wright
BRADRJRD, vr, MAY14
Overall, the New England Dirt Track Series seaso n opening weekend w as awesome for 1994
Vintage Champ Henry Landry.
The Landry' s Motorcycle Shop spons ore d
rider wo n Saturday night's Hea vy Vinta ge class
at Ca naan USA Speedway by half a track, and
we nt on to win again, despite a near seizure at
Bear Ridge Speedway on Mother's Day . It was a
busy weekend for Landry, to say the least .
"When I go t done in tha t last race (Sun day) 1
could hardly hold on to the han d leba rs," Landry
said after competing in three different cla sses
each day.
Jody Phe lps said the secret to his success in
the 250cc Pro class wa s nothing more than
"luck." At Canaan, he fought with early leader
Jim McGivern for the lead up until the las t lap,
and took the win about four bik e lengths ahead.
At Bear Ridge , with the track a little rough and
dusty, he diced hard with Jim Strong both in the
heat and feature races, winning the L tte r by a
,
slim margin.
.
Under the light at Canaan, the crowd pleaser
of th e evening had to be the Open Pro class
main event. The key players in the serious battle
for first were Morg an Coolbeth - cousin of 1994
Rookie of the Year Kenny Coolbeth, Jim Myrick
and Andy Segalini. Myrick took the holeshot,
but Coolbeth wa s quick to start trading back and
forth with him for the lead. They would ru n
neck and neck till th e halfway po in t, wh en ·
Segalini wedged himself into second p lace in
tum four . Myrick took to the inside, and tried in
vain to ca tch the pa ir, up until the finish, where
the orde r stood with Coo lbeth winning followed
by Segali ni and Myrick.
Myrick took overa ll wins in the Senior class
bo th days and the win in th e TT Cross on Sund a y . SK Y Cycle-s po nso re d Ke v in Co n no r
gra bbed two Lightweight Vintage class wins.
In the SOcc (7-8) class, David Halliday roared
to wins on both days. Walt er Kom isarek guided
his Yamaha to wins Saturday and Sunday in the
50cc (4-6) class.
