Beck and Beck prevail at Starwest By Davi d Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA MAY7 , It wa s the father and son team of Jim and Jason Beck that took the spo tlight in roun d five of the Truck/KTM Give--A-Way Series at Starwest MX. The sen ior Beck, Jim, did the deed in the 40+ Novice class, while his son, Jason, roosted to victory in the ·125cc Beginner divisi on. The 40+ Novices were teamed up wi th the 25 a n d 30+ riders, which ultimately made for an exciting race. In the firs t mo to, Ray Simmo ns (40+) surprised everyone , including him self, by leading the entir e pack into the first tum, riding the rear wh eel of his Honda CR2S0 the entire lengt h of the start straight. However, his moment of glory ended almos t as fast as it lasted , when 30+ class riders Marc Keech and Jer ry Sechler rocketed by Simmon s two turns later. Simmons was forced wide and this allowed fello w 40+ riders Beck and Ch ris Schlickenmeyer to close in." Beck stu di ed Simmons lines for one compl ete tr ip aro u nd th e Starwest cou rse before pickin g his spo t, as Simmons w ent out to the berm, Beck d ov e to th e insi de and made the pass. Schlickenmeyer had things a little tou gh er, as he wa s nursing a sore sho ulder and wasn 't attem pting to jump the infield dou ble. On the follow ing lap Schlickenmeyer go t. a bre a k, as Simm ons spun his Ho nda a full 360degrees around, as he was attemp ting to go for the sa m e doubl e-jump. Simmons regrouped quic kly and chased after Schli ckenmeyer. Two laps later, the tw o rid ers we re nose to tail but had caught up to lapped traffic. As Schlickenmeyer went to go aro und a lappe r, he was forced to the extreme ou tsid e when the rid er went to the ou tside as we ll. This left Sim mo ns with a cl ear in sid e lin e a nd he mot ored, once agai n, into the num ber two slot. The moto came to a close wi th Beck taking the checkered, Schlickenmeyer cha sed Simmons to the finish line but came up a bike length short. Mota tw o sa w Mark Strou p gra b t he holesh ot with Beck ho t on his heels, a few riders back, Schlickerimeyer was d oing his best to hold off Simmon s, jus t w he n Simmon s seeme d to have made a clean pass the CR250 rid er bobbled an d lost a few bike lengths on Schlickenmeyer' s Honda. Simmons, after quickly regrouping, made an even more in tens e charge for the number two position and this time made the pass d own the back straightaway, Schlickenmeyer was far from fin is hed , as he rep assed Simmons in the tigh t 18th ANNUAL GOOD TIME NATIONAL JULY 1 & 2, 1995 Darin Murdock placed seco nd In the 125cc Beginner class at Starwes t MX. The youn ger Beck - Jason - had a mu ch easier time in the first rnoto, with a wire- to-wire win in the 125cc Beginner class ahead of Darin Murdock and Jus tin Gu tierrez .
