Incleme nt wea ther an d horrendous riding conditions made for a dramatic setting , with the sk ies opening up the very morning of race day. The precipitation not on ly p u nished the riders, bu t the large number of courageous spec tators wh o were on hand, as welL Fortunately , the hard, 'ro cky terrain of th e ar ea did a good job of ha nd li ng the water, permitting a relatively troublefree race. Peterhansel, a Paris-Dakar and Interna tional Six Days Enduro hero , ro de t hroug h the ra in with s trengt h and determina tio n, easily outd is ta ncing 17Scc class rivals - home country riders Giovanni Sala and Tu llio Pellegrinelli. While the Fren chman's perform ance was no t exactly su rp risi ng, Italian Stefan o Passeri's 12Scc class win turned a few heads. In the 3S0cc Four-Stroke division, Italian Mario Rina ld i wo n th e firs t day , but ' countryman Arnaldo Nicoli came out ontop of Day Two . When the fina l points we re tallied, Rina ldi got the nod. Yet anot her Italian, Fabio Farioli, was favored to win the SOOcc Four-Stroke divisio n, bu t he couldn't match the Day-One pace of [aras lov Ka trin a k .
