But realizing that the lead had slipped away, Tarr es sud den ly changed tactics, slip ped ahead of Colomer, and put i n a d ev astat · ing finish. Tarres only lost a sing le poi nt in the fin a l fo u r secti ons , keep in g hi s loo p total d o w n to 14 . O ver those sa m e fou r sections, Colo mer sudde nly lost his concentration, cast eight po ints away, and once again had to wa tch his arch-rival snatch the g lory and th e 20 champions hip points. In front of these two - on the co u rse, a nyway - som e real actio n w a s b r e w in g betwee n La m p ki n and Bilbao . Th e Beta riders are good friends, and both we re sud d enly brim-full of confid ence. Through th e firs t 10 sections Lampkin ma tched Colomer with a four-mark loss, while Bilbao wa s o nly a p o in t fu r ther ad rift. Eac h wa s loa the to take his feet off the peg s. Lam pkin finis hed the las t four sections th ree-clean -three-clean fo r a lO-mark final card, w hich proved to be th e best sing le lap of the trial. Bilbao could n' t quite m atch this, and in fact was very an noyed with his three in th e fina l section, se t on th e stee p bankin g behi nd t he Dison Mot or C lu b ' s cl u b ho u se . Althou gh Bilbao tied with Lampki n on points - 55 each - he had to give his best, as Lampkin was pla ced higher after Saturday' s opening loop. Tarres wa s obviously happy to win foll owing his thi rd-place "d isaste r" in Ireland . .. "Yes, I am happy, ma inly because m y tactic o f moving a head o f Ma rc . worked," said Tarres. "I am very close to him in the championship now , yes?" Colomer, understandably, was not too keen to talk about it at all, having (Left) Mult i-time italian National Champion Donato Migllo fin ished a solid sixth. He sits seventh in the ser ies po int standings. (Above) Tommi Ahvala had a terrible weekend. The former Wor ld Champion fin ished an uncharacteristic seventh and lost touch with Tarres and Colomer in the championship point standings. just cast what looked to be a certain win away in the final four sections. "Yes, the trial was okay, but 1 ca n' t believe how I rod e in those fina l sections, " he said, withou t looking up. Lampkin had a sp ring in his step as he we nt to th e pq ze prese ntation. " It was a good trial, not a bad va riety of sec tio ns, " said La mpkin. "A lot o f techni ca l stuff, but some big hills as well. You have to be able to ride everything. I still ma ke so me d aft mis takes, but doesn' t every bod y? I am trying not to - it's coming." Bilbao wa s surpris ingly qu iet at th e end, saying , "1 ro de well enoug h fo r third and I am d isappointed that I did no t make the top three. I am riding we ll now, I finished second to [o rdi (beating Colomer) in th e Spa nish National la st week , and I am very happy w it h m y form." Grinning , Bilbao ad ded, "Say hello to all my American fans for me!" Ahvala wa s naturally feeling pretty low, following his cras h d own to seven th on the d ay. "The fourth se ct ion was psychologically im porta n t to me. When 1di dn' t ma ke it all my confidence seem ed to go . I tried but nothing happened - 1 don't really know wh at to do about tha t." Ja p a n es e w ond e r kid Ken ich i Kuroyama was in the points again follow ing his big sixth-place breakthrough in Irela nd, and his three consisten t lap s yie lded a 12th-place finish for th e 16yea r-old . "I fou nd th is d ifficult, su re, but I'm learning and 1 enjoyed th e trial," sa id th e Japan ese you ngste r, w ho rides like he has n' t a care in the wo rld.
