Do n Mendenhall and Randy Medley all in a positio n to take the series championship. It came down to the fina l round at the beautilul Oa tficld MX track. A s the ga le dropped fo r molo o ne, Mike Jo h nson pulled ou t a five bike-length lead by the second tum. Back in the pack, Montgomery. S te ve Pia ton i, Glenn Bri ck e y and Steve Lawrence all battled for position, By the end of the first lap . Greg Albin recovered from a bad s ta rt and moved pa st Lawrence and Terry Huffer to go afte r the leaders. A bobbie on the tricky off-cambe r jump by Brickey gave Albin the o pening he needed to move in to fourth. By then the leaders had a considerable advantage. Albin tried in vai n to ge t by Pia toni, \ bu t the mot o ended w ith Joh nson a nd Mo n tgo mery way o u t front, and Pia ton i, Alb in and Don Mendenhall roundi ng out the top five, Moto two was another Johnso n runawa y, as I he p ulled ano t he r inc redi b le h ol e sh ot a nd moved o ut to a di stant lead w he re he woul d finis h for the day, The race for second wa s a lo t close r as Huffer , Mont gomery a n d Br ic ke y ram med and slam med eac h othe r for the entire first lap .
