Murphy sweeps Heartland Park Topeka Road Race opener By Bob Applegate (K aw ). WHITNEY, IX, APR. 2 More th an 300 t urne d out for the ope n ing round of the 23rd An nua l Texas Series at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch and it was a day of cha llen ges. One of those challenges includ ed a face-off between two Team Green Intermediate racers Erick Vallejo and Caleb Leath . Both riders tra de d moto wins in the 125cc Intermed iate an d 125cc Open classes, with Leath claim ing the overall in the Intermed iate face-off and Vallejo th e top gun in the 125cc Ope n race. Leath grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Open moto with Vallejo chasing him all the way to the checkered flag. Murphy rode a box stock 1995 Kawasa ki ZX-6 to the win Saturday in the 48-bike Expert Solo GTU, edging out number-one-plated Tom Girard. Kevin Rentzell made the trip from Georgia to Kansas payoff wi th the win in the Suzukis u p p o r te d U nlimited Supers po rt eve nt. Rentzell came from the back of the pack , blowing by Michael Rueh le on lap five for the win and $500 in Suzuk i con tingency.
