Varnes Victorious at Trail-Way
Short Track Opener
By Len Breec h
HANOVER, PA. MAR 25
Coming o ff a good sh owi ng at th e Da yt ona
events, Kevin Varnes used a pair of borrow ed
machines to take a pair of wins in the 600cc Pro
and Sportsman events as Trail -Way Speedway
ope ned their 1995 short track season on a cold
and blustery March afternoon.
The biggest surprise of the day , though, was
Haas' 600cc A class win. where Mike Klopp had
th e Diem's Cycle /Fisher's Cycle /Carl Reid /
R.B.O.-backed Honda in fron t of jim Hollister,
Haas and Bob Sw eeten. Klopp an d Hollister
took off in the early lap s, but by the halfway
point Klopp stru ck ou t on his own and started to
pull a small lead on Hollister . Haa s was soon up
on Hollister, and with about three laps left, Haas
shot by - taking a clo sel y following Sw eeten
along for the rid e - and set out for Klopp. As
• they exited the final tum. Klopp "cho ked," as he
sa id later, and gave Haas the opening he needed
to slip his D-B Portin g Rotax by for the win.
In th e 600cc Pro cla ss, Kevin Varnes borrowed Mike Klopp's Honda and used the heat
race to ge t a feel for the bike. He adapted well:
In the final he gated in front of Harold Dorsey,
Gary Clark and Ken Mohler. After alm ost ge tting for ced into the fence on the opening lap
Kevin 's brother, Mike Varn es. worked his wa y
into third spo t after three laps, but by this time
Kevin had started to lengthen his lead and held
it for the win. Dorsey managed to hold off Mike
Varn es, who was followed bv Mohler in fourth,
and Clark fifth.
.
Mike stayed close to the youn ger Varn es in
the Sportsman final but couldn't make the pas s
and Kevin. this time on the Mike McKee Row,
too k the win there as well . Second through fifth
places were filled by Mike Var ne s, Sweete n,
Klopp and Winsett, respectively.
Mike McKee led Ch uck Buch an a n, Pau l
Lynch and Tom Skethway out of the second tum
as the 250 A class started. While McKee started
to sli p back wa rd , Tim Eades took over thi rd
coming off the second tu m on the seco nd lap.
But as they took the halfway flags, Lynch put his
Zoo m Cycle/M.L. Lyn ch Trans po rtation / Grim mel Furniture-spo nso red Ho nda in the lead and
stayed there. Buchanan rolled ove r the line in
second wi th Eades third. Skethway and McKee
roun ded out the top five.
