by Rich Bolen on qui ck TZ250. Bolen mov ed
from eighth to fourt h. But the best ride was put
in by TZ250 pilot Dan Brenne n, who came from
dead-last to finish fifth. Brennen climbed steadi ly each lap, and on the seventh lap, he pu lled off
a n e xcell ent o u t-b ra king p ass o n tw o rid e rs
going into tum one for the fifth spot.

Sunday's eight- lap fina ls saw Szarek lead the
C Superstock race from wire to wire, winning by
ove r 25 seconds ahead of Larry Golds tein. who
was followed by Joe Milanest. The B Superstock
race tu rn ed out slig htly mo re interesting as it
feat ured a th ree-w ay battle between Exp ert s
To m Coccia, Bryan Bemi sde rf er, and Gl en
Szarek. Coccia swap ped the lead wi th Bemisderfer unti l the halfway flags. On lap five, Sza rek
made his move to the fron t in tum three and
ne ver looked ba ck, Bem isderfer and C occia
scrapped until the very end, with Coccia taking
second by using a draft-pass right at the finish
line. In the B Superbike Exp ert fin al Szarek
made his mark once aga in, leading flag to flag .
But a ra ce for second throu gh fifth was ragin g
behind him, as Greg Leffler, Bernisde rier, Coccia, and Paul D. Youngman tried to stake their
cla ims . In the end, Leffler held on fo r seco n d
with Coccia third, You ngman fourth and Bemisderier rounding ou t the top five.

making it four on the d ay aboard his YZF600.

take the overall.
The toughes t ba ttles tha t Horton faced came
in 125cc B class racin g as he wen t head to head
agains t And y Cald well and Adam Rake. Caldwell had the gate pegged all da y as he took both
moto holeshots aboard his Suzuki RMl 25 to lead
the early go ing of bo th motes, but he eventuaUy
fe U victim to both Hor ton a nd Rak e. Hor ton
went on for both wins, and Rake took run ner-up
in both outings .
Though Horton was the winni nges t rid er of
the d ay, Jim 's Motorcycle Sales / Pro Ci rcuit /
O'N eal/Dunlop /Sc ott USA-backed Jim Neese ,
wh o has been racin g in the AMA 125cc East
Coast Supercross and Outdoor Na tiona l Series .
Neese used this event as a way to do some racing close to home. In the first 2S+ A moto, Tilde n
Styron blasted ou t of the gate ahead of Bobby
Stovall and Rob McWhorter. Neese , mean while,
was bu sy flound erin g around at the back of the
ba ck in 13th . But by th e seco nd turn, N eese
bega n to pic k off rid er s like they were sitting
still. Neese sliced his wa y to the lead spot before
the end of the first lap and was gon e for the win.
Stova ll took the holesh ot in moto two but
was quickly dis placed to second by Neese, and
once again Neese was unt ouch able as he locked
up the victory . Brand on Tu rlington's consistent
3·3 score ne tted him seco n d' on th e pod iu m.

class.

Schwa rtz in gates fou r and five. Nicol used a
rocket-like ga te to grab the lead off the line, and
he held it for two laps before losing it to Oxley
as the y exited tu rn four . Th e two expert blu e
groove riders, Oxley and McConnell found tile
track to their liking and took over the top tw o
sp o ts, fin ish ing in tha t o rd e r. Schwartz and
H icks finished th ird and fou rth wh ile N icol,
who had gone down, was fifth.
Oxley and Hicks were among the eight riders making it through the pro gram to the Handicap main along wi th Bobby Hed den, Mark Hannah, Andy Northrup, Jim Estes, Jesse Finch, and
John Aden. Finch - a former U.S. Junior Nationa l
Champion - Hann ah, and Estes d rew the short
yardage on the 30 with Oxley coming from the
50 and eve ryone else in between.
Estes led the field to the first corn er as the
tape came up, but his lead was very short-lived
as Hicks came from the 40 and took the lead at
the end of lap two . Finch also had his sights on
Estes bu t soo n had h is ow n pr oblem as Oxley
came th rou gh traffi c. By lap th ree, Oxley had
disposed of Finch and pursu ed Estes, but Estes
d idn't lose h is cool an d he ld on for secon d.

Northrup, Aden. Hedden and Hann ah rounding
out the field .
The Coo rs Light Chall enge is back th is season, and the first rou nd had Cha rlie Venegas,
Oxley, Schwartz, Pfetzing an d McConn ell squarin g off. When the one -lap elimination roun d s
we re over, Venegas pu lled off the two- lap win
over Oxley to collect the gold.

Ermolenko did some match racing to the delight
of the Costa Mesa crowd. The action mark ed the
first time Correy ha s been seen on a speed way
tra ck since breakin g his back in Septembe r of
1993. But Er mo le nko p rov ed to be a tou gh
match, as the 1993 World Cha mp ion defeated
Correy in two straight heats.
Reigning California Sta te Sidecar Champions
Lewis and Mavy ran a:~ay from the rest of the
field on their aw esom e TTl sid ecar rig to win the
Sidecar main. Joe Erha rdt held off a fast closing
Angela Hale to win the Suppo rt class main, and
Craig DeP hilippi ro de a laydow n [a wa to the
Support B main win .
