I would like to take a moment to reflect on one of your Cycle News writers Tony Alessi. On April 2 my son Ricky Oliver was racing in the 0 to 8 60cc class at the Cast aic Brick Spring Classic. As Rick y an d Mike Alessi raced for five laps in the second moto to decide the class ove rall winner, something un usu al ha ppened on th e backside of the tr ack. Ric ky" go t ta ken out in a turn wh il e batt ling Mi ke and exited the tra ck, missing about three turns. Tony Alessi, w ho was announcin g the race, ran ou t on th e tr ack and stop p ed his ow n son to let my son catch up afte r the inci dent. Rick y too k the lead on ly to crash . Mike Alessi went on to win and Ricky got second. A fter t he r a ce I drove home an d reflecte d on Tony ' s u nse lf ish ac t to ma ke the race fair an d square. The Alessi family demonstra ted a class act and I think what Tony , Ricky, and Mike did was right and showed th at sometimes there are more important things than just winning at all costs. Rick O liver Bellflower, CA Tony Alessi couers local motocross eoents in Sou/hem Ozlifornia for Cycle News... Editor. No fair Although I haven't felt that the East Coast Amateur MX racing has received its fair share of larger headl ines, detailed reports and hype, I have been fairly pleased with the non-partisanship of Cycle News reporting on Pro-le vel ra ci ng . Your reportin g of the East Coast SX Series in 1995 has caused me to reconsider . Whe n Davey Yezek was a me mber of Team Green in 1993, he was apparently pa rt of the " In Crowd" and was given his fair share of coverage. I think he mad e an impressive entry into Pro le v e l m otocro ss fro m the Ama te ur ranks and fi nished well in the Eas t C oa st 125cc SX sta n dings . He was p icked up b y Honda of Troy in 1994 a nd had a less tha n stella r yea r a nd di dn't live up to his billing from 1993. Casu al obse rv ers m ig h t tel l us th at Dav ey w as uns ure of hi mself on big triples w hen it wa s in fact injur ies in Jap an and Orlando that we re tough to shake, both emo tiona lly and p hysically. In 1994 Davey was unable to hold his po sit ion on the Honda of Troy team, being ejected for the likes of Mike Craig an d Brian Swink. Davey worked hard to put together his own privateer effort for 1995 and, with the support of F&S Cycle of Ohio, has been riding a Suzuki. His finis hes ha ve been steadily improving with a fourth at Daytona and a third at Ind iana polis. Why then does he get only an "al so ra n" line in Cycle News' coverage o f these races. Davey is currently fourth in the East Coas t 125cc SX standi ngs , the only pri vateer even close to the factory guys and d oing it on a b ike tha t gives up a lot to the equ ip me nt that has finished in fro n t of h im . Wh y does arm p u mp excuse Kevin Windham's finish in Indy instead of a fan tas tic rid e on an esse ntially stocky Suz uki extol Yezek/s podium finish? Davey is a grea t guy, a hard worker, an d a de dica ted compe tito r who's parents canno t bu y him the ticket to a slick ride. It's tough to compe te with the factories for a finish position. The p ress is the only voice for the privateer . Please give Davey the cred it he's earned. And by the wa y, give Suzuki credit too. Davey has shown that the Suzuki is a bike a pri vateer can take in to the fray w ith the unobtainiums a nd compete successfu lly. It' s guys like Davey who prov ide an alternative to th e factory egos and u n ob ta in iu ms. He goes out a n d beats the od d s. Suppose he had some real support and a little hype. Ya wanna make a bet? Bob Bagw ell Winter Spri ngs, FL The Shoe Man In respo nse to your interview wit h Will Davis, you sta ted that Steve Morehead and Geo Roed er are the on ly guys out there stiIl 'wearin g th ose lace-u p cons tru ction boots. He re is th e answer to what you call a "cons truction boot. " They are Ken Maely flat track boots which are specially mad e with no heel on the left foot . With out a heel on the left foot , the steel shoe is ab le to plan e better - just like a speed boa t. Every time someo ne sends me a steel shoe to rehard face and the only place it has been worn out is the fro n t outside, I kn ow h e is wearing a boot wi th a heel. I then w rite them a note telling them to cu t the heel off so the weight is on the back and not on th e toe . Th e w e igh t ca n ma ke the steel shoe d ig in the dirt and can tear the cartilage out of his knee or p ull him back and he could get hurt. The d irt trackers are like my ·own children. I sold their grandfather's stee l shoes as I h a ve been bu ild in g st eel shoes for th ree ge ne ra tio ns . The d irt trackers are my family and I care about them . I have bee n making steel shoes since 1947 for custo me rs a ll ove r th e worl d a nd w hen yo u call d irt track boots "o ld construction boot s" it shows that yo u d on ' t kno w '&$% about d ir t tra ck racin g. I ha ve been to more dirt track ev ents all ove r th e w orld than any one. Our d irt track boo ts are mad e special for us in W iscons in - n o t Europe. We beli eve in U.S. products. The soles are sewed - n ot g lued on li ke y ou r m o tocross boots. All the so les are grou nd at a 45-degree ra tio so the boot doesn 't ge t dirt ca ug ht in betw een the soles. And our boots are made of leather ins tead of plastic, giving you bette r feel for the brake ped al an d gear shift. They are also half as light as MX boots . I can make a lighter steel shoe than I can with a MX boot which is really just a ski boot. So when a rid er sends me a MX boot which weighs four pounds and wants a light steel shoe, how can I do that with a boot that is wider and two sizes larg er than our d irt track boots. Now, Donn Maeda , you know wh at the difference is between MX boo ts and ours - what y o u call " co ns tr u c tio n boo ts." I am in my 70s and I don't like to see so me Johnny Come Lately mak ing statements when they don't know &%$' abou t boo ts. I will be out making steel sh oes and boo ts long after you are ou t of th e d irt track scene. So wi se up witJ-t your statements : When you step on my toes, I get mad .
