The only rider wh o could have challenged Rayborn for the win, Mark McDanie l, suffered a horr endous sta rt and had to work his way through the field for severa l lap s before moving into the trophy position. Mesa's second place, his best-ever in Formula Pacific, was complemen ted by a win in Open Gra nd P rix and anot he r secon d beh ind McDaniel in Open Superbike. McDaniel nearl y made a race of it in th e 750cc Supe rbike contest as well but crashed out harml essly while attempting to ride around the outside of his compe titors in Tum 11. That left Dav id Sta n to n and Anthony Lupo to sw a p places for th e lead throughout the race , with Stanton capitalizing on a slight bobble by Lupo coming out of the chica ne to take the lead for good. Lupo finished in second, with jesse Broad way third and Glenn Filshie fourth. The 600cc Superbike race gave Todd Hoeft a chan ce to show his stuff, sho wing superb fonn in getting the best of veteran Tom Montano, Ron Chiaralti and Robert Nunez. Montano brought his Yamaha home first in the 600cc Production class after fending off challenges from Chiaralti and Kawasaki -moun ted Robbie Dowie. Fris ta n be gan to u nrave l and was soon feeling the pressu re from the Kawasa~ ki-mou n ted Orr. Friston's duration do ubled when his handlebars came loose and began to move forward and backward, causing him to flounder about the . track. Orr slipped past Friston and took over the second spot but was well beh ind Erikson. who was up front and cruising . Just after .the halfway point in the race Erikso n went down and opened the door for Orr, who glady accep ted the lead . Orr went on for the mota win while Erikson settled for second. Friston had a wild ride and managed to han g on for third while Hideaki Suzuki and August Culver rounded out the top five. "Frista n pulled a repeat holeshot in the second mota but gave up the lead on the second lap to Bren t Paulson . Erikson forgot to tum on his gas and stalled his machine just after the start of the race, which left him to battle from the back of the pack. Orr was aga in on the cha rge and passed Friston the sixth lap of the la-lap race. Orr p ut gro und between himself and Friston but was una ble to catch Paulso n, who scored the mota win . APR. 9 Cal Rayborn grabbed the holesho~ rocketed 10 a h uge lead, and went virtuall y u nchallenged in the opening round of the AFM's 1995 Fonnula Pacific serie s at Sears Point International Raceway. Pocorobba, Priputen prevail at CRC Motocross By Greg Roberts on PALMDALE, CA. APR. 2 Los Angeles County Raceway was the site of the opening round of California Racing Dub's 18th annual Tri Race Series. Anthony Pocorobba and Scott Priputen each used perfect I-I sco res to top the 250cc Pro and 125cc Begi nner classes, repectively. Tracy Ashe r edged ou t Pocorobba, Malcolm Watson and Ty Kady for the first250cc Pro malo hole shot, bu t Pocorobba mad e his inten tio ns clear by taking control only four turns into the race. Watson and Katy tangled in a comer and went down, handing third place to BillSauro. Pocorobba wo uld end up leading every lap and taking the checkered flag going away, leaving the only real racing on the track for second place. Sauro was pressuring Asher for second and mad e his bid for the position on the final lap . Sauro dived underneath Asher in a left· hand sweeper, but Ashe r retaliated by keeping the th rottle pinned down for the length of the followi ng straight to regain the position. Two turns later Sauro literally slammed his way past Asher to once again move into second . where he would stay until the finish. Nick Mairose took fourth while Katy recovered to eam fifth. Asher duplicat ed his first-moto start wit h Pocorobba on his rear fender ready to pounce. Pocorobba wasted lit tle tim e a nd shot aroun d As her on t he ope ni ng lap. Ash er go t ou t o f shape in so me wh oop s caus ing him to over shoo t th e follo w ing turn and allow Katy to mov e in to the ru nner-up position . The Smith FMF/SN R/ Race Tech /Bi effe-backed Pocorobba look ed to ha ve the sa nd tr ack wired as he grad ua lly pull ed away fro m Katy to gree t the checkers first to take home the first place cash . Sa u ro w or ke d up from a p o or start t o ge t around Asher at the halfwa y point for a thirdplace fin ish, good eno ugh for second overall on the da y. Priputen nailed the first 12Sec Beginner class mota holeshot but had a tr oubl esome first lap and would end up d ropping back to sixth place. Kevin Townsend inherited the lead and looked to be running away from a good battle for second betw een Jason D ark and Jay Schreffler until ' his bike broke with a couple of laps remaining. Prip u ten kept charging throughout the mo ta and eventually passed both Clark and Schreffler to take over the lead . On ce ou t front, Priputen ea sily pulled aw ay to take the win by a 15second margin over Clark. The se cond mot o wa s all Priput en 's, as he went wire-to-wir e for the convincing win. Clark and Jeff Nolan argue d ove r second place for much of the race with Dark coming out on top in the end. Schreffler came back frem a first-lap crash to finish fou rth and fourth overall behind the 4-3 SCore of Nolan. Resu lts Pee w~ B-2: 1. Dave C.u 1t-"r (Yam ); 2. Ht'.a ~ Dubi n (KTM ); 3.
