AMAJPizza P egaSeries: R 3 lusM ound Swinks stomps Echeconnee MX By Jamie Hark rader MACON, GA, APR. 2 onda of Tro y-backed Bria n Swink carne to Echeco nnee MX for rou nd three of th e A MA /P izza Plus MegaSeries - held .in conju nction w ith the AMA Georgia Sta te MX Ch ampionship - and emerged as the winner in the competitive 125cc Pro class Kevin Walker had his sights set on the dash for the class victory and pulled off holeshots in both motos of the 125cc Pro division, forcing Swink to earn the wins. Like two gallant wa rriors Swink and Walkert battle d fu riou sly for the top honors, showing no mercy towa rd each othe r while lead ing the pack. In the end, Swink prevailed. Although Walker successfully pulled th e se co nd -rou n d hol eshot, th e "Swinkster" was soon knocking at Walker's back d oor while th e Georgia boys Dwayne Bone, Chad Murphy, Chris Bailey, Robert MuIlias and Scott Bryand left Walker and Swink with absolutely no room for a bobble or mistake. The pressure was on WaIker after the . "rumble" in round one, and he made a serious error at the halfway mark of the las t lap, giving Swink the chance to com e back and take th e lead . Swink raced on to take the second-mote checkers for the overall win. The first 250cc Pro division moto was a hot one as Walker, Paul Currie, Billy Liles and Brian McElroy took th e top four positions while Swink had to swiftly w ork his wa y up through th e pack after a mishap in turn two of the gate. Swink was left with a fifth-place finish in moto one.' Mot o two wa s an other tough battle with the tables turned, as Liles, Swink, Currie, Walker and Earl May dominated the first three laps. Liles, Swink, Currie and WaIker took a sizeable lead over the pack, and after a five-lap battle, Swink made a move on Liles during lap five to take the lead and hold it to the checkered flag for the win. In the end, Liles 3-2 score p roved to be enough for th e overall win in the class. [N H N RA Winston Drag Racing Series: Round2 H Schultz sees red, Myers bags Gatornationals win By Todd Veney GAINFSVILLE, FL, MAR. 31-APR. 2 on' t look now, but Pro Stock drag racing has gotten interesting since defending champion Da ve Schultz still hasn't won a race. For the second straight year Schultz redlighted against arch rival John Myers in the final round at the Gatomationals, handing victory to the Star Racing Suzuki rider and thu s losing as many times (twice) as he did in all 42 of his NHRA heats last season. Ag ainst Schultz, Myer s, who qu alified just seventh, 'cut his fourth reaction time in a row between .040 and .054 and produced a fourth consecuti ve pass within a similarly tight range, (.Ol6-second), a 7.589 at 170 .87 to cement the win. Aware th at he'd won long before he popped the second -gear button, Myers, the defending Gatornational s ....... . champion, blew off his shift points and l-< just enjoyed the ride. 0.. "I saw the red-light in his lane, and I got so excited I just started pushing gears," Myers said. "I would have run quicker if I'd been paying attention, D ..... -e 26 (Top) Dave Schu ltz (near lane) handed - defend ing event champion John Myers (far lane) a second stra ight win at the NHRA Gato matlonals by redllghting in th e fi nal round. (Above) James Ford nailed down second-place honors In the Open Out law cla ss at the Elk City MX. believe me, but at that point I really didn't care." It's not as if Myers was off pace during the event, anyway, th ough he d id qualify in the middle of the pack with just a 7.66/169.36. Schultz, naturally, led qualifying but b y less th an onethousandth of a second. But once eliminations began , no one had anything for Myers, wh o was in the 75-second zone in all fou r rounds. He dumped Paul Gast and Olm's tead with back-to-hack 759s at 171 mph, which s tacked ' up n ic el y n ext to Sch u ltz's 759 /174.24 and 7.57/1 76.81 wins over Horace Wright and Ron Ayers. The margin between Myers and Schultz shran k even more in th e se mifinals, wh ich, as exp ect ed , consisted of Schu ltz, Smith, ' Phillips, and Myers. Both defeated opponents' 7.61s with 757s, bu t Myer s was involved in a much closer decision. He and Phill ip s left as one in th ei r 75 79/ 176.22 to 7.61/169.26 race, which made for a tight margin at the finish line. Schultz beat Smith by th e same score, 7570/177.40 to 7.61 /176.81, bu t only after taking a giant lead at th e start with a near-perfect .002 reaction time that could have just as easily been a foul. A potentially explosive showdown in the final was spoiled when Schultz left too soon . Resuhs Z50 A: 1. Billy Liles (5u%); 2. Paul Cu rrie (Kaw ); 3. Kevin Walker (Yam); 4. Brian Swink (Hon); 5.
