jason Upshaw was uns toppable as he took his
second-str aight Pro class win at the Pep si I Air
Da nia Motocross Pa rk, wh ich p layed h ost to
some 150 entries.
Seve ral new obstacles we re ad ded to challen ge even the most ex perience d riders. The
"featu re" class riders we re stoked up to race for
the $1000 pu rse being paid back on the new per moto forma t. Steve Stojack hol eshot the first
. moto with Upshaw on his Dallas Ho nda /MSRbacked CR250 in tow . Former rap star Vanilla
Ice (A.K.A. Rob Van Winkle) ran in third place
going in to the off-camber turn before the first
do uble but then did a face plant and knocked
himself out of contention.
Upshaw imm ed iately took comma nd of the
top pos ition an d stretched out a commandi ng
lead , figuring that Dust in Rou nds wo uld soon
be pressuring him for the lead. But Upshaw was
never cha llenged, as Rounds first had to fend off
the attack of Paul Currie.
just past the halfway poinfof the moto, Cur-
rie wicked up the thro ttle and reeled Rounds in.
Neither ride r was willing to give an inch. Going
into a high -ber m 18Q-degree comer the two rid ers collide d, with Roun ds crash ing back to third
place. Upsha w finished wi th a com fort able sixsecond lead over Currie.
Ups haw go t t h e jum p ou t o f t he ga te ,
smoked the field into the first tu rn du ring the
second mot o and was go ne for the wi n. Currie
grabbed second with Stojack, Ice and Rounds in
tow. Currie then we n t down, tu rning second
place over to Ice. On the next lap Rounds picked
off Stojack in the "Toile t Bow l" and set his sight
on th e for mer rap star. Cu rrie chase d do wn
Round s, and a battle ensued with some excellent
w hee l- to-wheel racing. Wh en th e tw o riders
a pproache d the site o f their first mot o clash ,
they reversed stra tegies, as Curri e took the faster
high line and Rounds chose to use the low line
to block-pass Cu rr ie. The move met wi th the
sa me resu lts, only this time it was Currie wh o
crashed his way back to fourth pla ce. Roun ds
charged on but was un able to catch Vanilla Ice,
an d he held onto third place ·after suffering a
clutch failure that slowed his pace cons iderably.

Morehead masters Dayton
indoor ST
By Bert Shepard
DAYTON, OH, MAR. 25
"Check wi th Whee ler, all I did was get a goo d
sta rt," sai d Steve Morehea d in reference to the
builder an d tuner of his w inn ing sho rt track
mount, Mike Wheeler, after Morehead ke p t
Will Da vis a nd Dave Hebb at bay to wi n the
600cc Pro-Am class during the first motorcycle
event ever at Wright Sta te University's Ervin J.
Nu tte r Cente r.
The evening 's Pro-Am eve nt was promoted
by the Dayt on Mo to rcycle Cl ub , th e Ha rm on
family of auto dealers in the Dayton. Ohio, area,
and Carl and Budd y Dice for the benefit of the
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dayto n.
The concrete sho rt track was the first in the
Dayton area in a long time.
"It was so long ago, it was one of the first
mot orcy cle races I ever wen t to," remarked
Morehea d's wife Cindy .
In fact, the last time such an even t was held,
Steve Mor ehead was a rookie Expert.
But Mor ehead looked every bi t the Gra nd
Nation al veteran tha t h e is during the 600cc ProAm main event. Afte r to p p in g h is h eat and
semi, Mor eh ead sta rte d jus t ou tside of Davis,
wh o had selected th e in side p ole to st art the
main. Recil Hart and Ken Yod er lined up on the
front row to Morehead 's right. Dave Hebb lined
up behind Davis with Ian Segedy , jess Roeder
and Jam es Hart completing row two .
Th e " Fin d lay Fly er' s" reacti on time was
sharp, and he led the field into tum one. Davis
ne ve r lost to u ch with Moreh ead as th e tw o
pulled a few leng th s advantage on the field.
Dav is' passing efforts wete frustrated as the 15
laps started to was te away; the ins ide move was
no t there. But the "rent-a-racer" that he was riding was wor king well, and Davi s .began to try
and tip toe around the outsi de of Morehead . Just
wh en it looked as though Davis would comp lete
the pass, he was foiled .
.
'"I thou ght I could get Stev ie on the ou tside,
then Hebb stuck his whe el in," Davis said later.
He bb had broken free of the pack and got
under Davis for a brief tou r in secon d place, but
Davis rebo un de d at the flag an d collected the
seco nd -p lace mo ney while Morehead clai med
the win.
The 250cc Pro-Am ma in even t we n t to
Robert Lewis. The MARS regu lar earned the win
with a last-tum move tha t pu t race leader Hebb
on the floor of the brand new facility. Georg ie
Price a nd Yoder finis hed seco n d and third,
respectively.
