Upshaw wins Pepsi/Air Dania Motocross opener By Ed and David Kimmey DANIA, FL, MAR. 19 Th e Peps i I Air Dania Motocross Pa r k, the first track to ope n in So uthe rn Flo rid a in ov e r a decade, celebrated its grand opening March 19th with a typical su nn y South Florida da y that saw Jason Upshaw emerge with th e Pro class win. More than 2000 spectators cam e out to see 250+ rid er s in 18 classes compe te at the new facility an d to watch the Pro class vie for the $2200 purse. With 16 ride rs makin g it into the first tum Upshaw came out wjth the holesh ot . In pursuit of Ups haw wa s Jason M e followed by Grayson tz Goodman. Upshaw pu lled out to a commanding lead in the first mota whil e sho wing everyone how to ride this new track. Goodman overtook Metz and wa s then challenged by local top gun Du stin Rou nd s. This ba ttle raged for ove r eight laps until Good ma n succumbed to the pressure, lettin g Rounds move past for second place over Goodman as Upshaw went on to wi n. Shaw Dunkel nailed the holcsh ot in the seco nd mo ta w it h Eri ck Claiss ie in to w . Bu t halfway through the first lap, Rounds too k over the top spo t and was trying to pu t as much time between himsc1f and the res t of the field . By the end of the second lap , Rounds had pulled fou r seconds ahead of Ups haw and Goodma n. wh o we re fighting it o ut for seco nd and third pla ce. Ups haw and Goodman picked up the pace and ree led -in Rounds th ree laps later - tha t' s w hen the real battle beg an. AIl three riders maintained a blisterin g pa ce with Rounds and Upshaw engagi ng in so me excellent wheel-to-wheel racing . It wa s obvious to some spectators that Goodma n was keeping the pace and waiting for the leaders to make a criti cal erro r. At the halfway point of the mote, both riders collided at a 2O-fool dropoff section. Th is was the error.Goodman had waited for . He passed bo th riders, p ull ed o u t a Comm a nd ing lead and was nev er challen ged as the battle for second continued on behind him. As Goodman kept a tight hold on first place, Rounds an d Upsha w raced for seco nd pla ce and the overall win. With Goodman's third in moto one, the winner between the second- and thirdplace riders wo uld get the overa ll and the lion's share of the $2200. Nei ther rider wou ld give an inch as Rounds success fu lly held Up shaw off. But with th ree lap s remain ing , Rou nd s got caught up in an off-camber ru tted comer, lost his front wheel and the overall win to Ups haw . Results PR O : 1. Juon Up ,h. w ; 2.
