Gary Stu mm led race one, held und er dry conditions, from start to finish to top the Vintage Four class which had the largest field with 17 entries. Paul Garland and Jimmy Clark finished second and third, resp ectively, as 350cc Yarnahas dominated the class, which hosted both twoand four-stroke entries. Gary Smith overcame a poor start to win the Vin ta ge One class over Breck on and fini sh th ird ov era ll in th e race, pa ssing all bu t Stu mm and Ga rland from the Vintage Four clas s. On ly the few and the br ave dared the wet condi tions for race three as Stevenson took the win in the Vintage Six field, while Julian Poozatek won the Vintage Three batt le on his Hond a 400. (Kaw). .); Ludwig, Rentzell rule Talladega Road Race By Chester Fie lds TAL LADEGA, AL, MAR. 25-26 Local hotshoes Kevin Rentzell and Patrick Lud wig domi nated the money classes at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway, winning five races between the m 'at the WERA Mid-Cen tral Region al roa d race. Rentzell, now rid ing Kawasakis, took the top spot in C Superbike and B and C Supe rstock on h is ZX-6 R, while Ludwig, on h is Yama ha YZF750, won A Su pe rsto ck and B Sup er bike . Ren tzell too k home at least $1800 in Kawasaki continge ncy for his sprin t race victories. The B Su pe rbike race was a hea ted cla sh between the two riders as they battled for the lea d fro m the g reen fla g . Ren tz ell go t th e holesh ot , but Lud w ig ran hi m d ow n, fin ally o ver ta kin g him wi th a d aring outbraki ng maneuve r in tum two, p ushing Rentzell out to the grass, where he was forced to back off. Ludwig, riding on slicks, took the po int and was never headed, while RentzeIl, always an aggres~ sive rider, had to set tle do wn for second on his DOT ti res . Rentzell later accused Lud wig of un safe rid ing, bu t Lu d w ig sh rugged it off as good raci ng and effectiv e us e of so me of Rentzell's ow n tried -and -true techniques. Rentzell was do min an t in the B Su pers tock race on his 600 Kawa saki against the 750 power of second- and third-place finishers Steve Patterson and Lud wig. Rentzell wh eelied his way to victory while Ludwig and Valvoline Suzuki's Patterson bange d handl ebars d isputing second, with Ludw ig getting th e nod on his private er Yamaha. In a d di tio n to Patters on , Team Suz u ki 's MIchael Martin showed u p try ing to get some track time in preparation for the upcoming sea~ son. Martin set a new lap record in Su nday morning pr actice, wrestlin g the big Team Valvoline GSXRllOO arou nd the V I·mile track in 57.4 seconds, two tenths of.f the pr ev ious best time set last season by Tray Batey. Martin was push ing it hard enou gh to be black-flagged in practice' after comerworkers spotted smoke coming fro m the mach ine . Wh en Ma r ti n p u lle d in, WERA officials and Team Suz uki's Keith Perry determi ned that the only thin g smoking was his rea r tire! Marti n won the 50-miler on Saturday and stayed around long eno ugh Sunday to win the Formula One even t with ease.
