Motocrosser Fred Con over won the overall in the Vet Clas s at the Malcolm Smith Motorsports Grand Prix at Glen Helen Raceway. The course, laid out by the legendary Malcolm Smith with the help of the Prairie Dogs, combined the existing motocross and vintage tracks with sandwashes, hill top ridges, and fire roads. Each lap was approximately 12 miles in length. The dead-engine sta rt o f the Vet race saw Conover out in front from the first tum. Leaving the motocross portion of the course and heading out to some of the tighter trails, you woul d have tho ught that some of the desert regulars would be able to keep the leader in sigh t, but when Conover came back into spec tator view he had over a one-minute advantage on second-placed joe Bagnasco, who was followed by Dave Mullen. Ken Tomeo, Larry johnson. and Larry Gross. The rider on the move, Chad Blough worked his wa y from a 2Oth-plare start to the top 10, by the first lap . The third lap sa w some major shuffling when Bagnasco pulled off the course with a flat front tire, Blough mad e his wa y around the others to take over second , and Gross got past Johnson for third. The race was two-hours long so everyone would have to pit for fuel at least once. Conover had one of the most efficient pit stops, with no less then six people help ing with fuel, a drink, and a fresh pair of goggles. The MRD InjecIDr /Fox /FMF /Ka wa saki of Rivers ide-sp onsore d Conover we n t on to ta ke the checkered fla g with more than a seven-minute lead over Blough. Gross was third. followed b~ Todd Broussard, Tomeo, and Nathan Dav is. The Unclassified even t was the first face of the day, and it offered a chance for some of the riders to see the course for the first time . The race fea tu red severa l di fferent typ es of rid ers, in cl ud ing Ty Kad y, a regular at Glen Helen mo tocross events, and Dave Ondas, an off-road specialist. Kady look the holeshot, and with the familiarity of the motocross portion opened up an immediate 10 bike-length lead wi th Ondas in seco nd . Kad y maintained his lea d through the north part of the course. but On das closed the gap. Wh en th e le aders came b ac k on to the motocross po rti on , Kady once again us ed his familiarity and pu lled away aga in. The first lap sa w Kady in first. followed by Ondas, Chris Nelson. and john Sereika. The race was 45 minutes in length.. so on th e completion of th e second lap, th e Ma lco lm Sm ith , Pro C ircuit, MSR, Ma xim a, GTI, G len Helen Raceway-sponsored Kad y received the white flag. The battle was for third as Sereika went around Nelson working his 125 through the hea vy and slick mud. Ondas came within 10 seconds of Kad y on the final lap; but not being used to the stadium-style whoop section, Ondas played it safe, slowed up and took them one at a time. Kady took the checkered first. with Ondas, Sereika, Nelso n, and Craig Adams rounding out the top five. Results V IC; 1. Ty K.1d ISuz ); 2. o.vt'Ondu (K.l.w); 3. John Serrib y (Suz); 4.
