Tallad ega Gran Pri x Racew ay was the sigh t of
this yea r's WERA sou theastern regional season
open er, and you couldn't hav e asked for a bett er
weekend, weather-wise or otherwise.
A lmost 200 racer s took ad vanta ge of the
op tim u m conditions and pu t o n an awesome
display of close racing action. Novice and Expert
alik e went wheel-to-w h ee l, la p -af te r-I ap,
thrilli ng the large spectator crowd on hand. Satu rday's racing action sa w th e run n in g of th e
four so lo SO· m ile rac es , which we re broken
down in to Hea vyw eigh t Expert and Novice as
well as Middleweight Expert and Novice, with
the Lightweight combined class carried over to
Sunday sched ule.
Tray Batey started his weekend off right by
takin g the chec kere d flag win in th e Hea vywe ig h t Exper t So lo 50-miler. josh ua H a yes
grabbe d the ea rly lead w it h a g rea t ho les ho t
only to have Batey catch and breeze by him on
lap three. Batey then cruised to an easy victory .
The race was red -flagged once, du e to down ed
ride rs and the close p roximity of the amb ulance
and comcrworkers to the track.
Sprint racing Sunday saw some bar-to-bar
racing that pac ked not only the stands bu t the
infield par king area as we ll. Superstock racing
Team Suzuki End urance-ride r Batey brought his
'95 Suzuki GSXR 1100 across the finish line well
ahead of second-place finis he r Patrick Lud wig
in A Superstock. Bat ey tu rned in so me very
imp ressive lap times, as he d ropped into the 58second range consistently.
"We cam e here to sort out the 1100," Batey
sa id . " Although it ran p retty qu ick tod ay, we
still have so me adj u s tments to ma ke which
should make the bike faster ."
Ludwig, rid ing his Yamaha yzP 750, turned
se ver al high ~59 -secon d lap s bu t was unable to
catch the ultra-qu ick Ba tey on the larger-disp lacement mach ine. Lu dw ig took over seco nd
place, from an always tou gh Kevin Rentzell, with
. a risky late-braking man eu ver in tum one. With
Lud wig now in second and RentzeU in third, the
top three spots were set to the checkered .

Turner jams at Bluegrass MX

Nick Turner was u ns top pab le a t the Blueg rass
Motocross Park seaso n ope ner, which dr ew over
150 rid ers.
Turner wo n bo th motos to score the overall
win in thc ·l25cc B class in his first race as a B
rider. During both mot es, Turne r looked as if he
had the tra ck wired .

James Russel Maxam won both motos in the
60cc class, one of the most hotly contes ted classes
of the day. Shane jen kins got the holsehot in the
first moto but wa s quickly pursu ed by Maxam.
who quic kly passed Jenk ins and never looked
back. The second moto was wilde r than the first.
jenkins got another big ho leshot and was ope ning up a big lead with Michael Hardcastle in hot
pursuit. Maxam was running third , befo re tu rning it on to pas s Hardcastle and jenkins. Maxam
th en pulled away, makin g it look easy, as he
topped the second moto for the clean sweep.
David McWilliam s rode to a first ove rall in
th e 250cc 0 class . Mc Will ia ms wo n the first
moto go ing away, bu t the second mot o was a little ha rder, as he got caug ht in the star ting gate.
McW illi a ms ca ug h t a n d p assed every rid er
excep t the lead er, to card a second -p lace finish
in the moto and lockup the overall. Conside ring
how he ran in the second mota, McWilliams will
be moved to the 250cc C class for the next event.
