(Left)Steve Tucker raced to wins in the Premier Lightweight II and Premier 500 .11 Expert classes during round one of the AHRMANintage Iron M otocross Ser ies at the Ocala Motorsports .Complex. (Below) Rick Doughty (shown) roosted to the 500Cc Expert victory after two racelong battles with . Dick Mann. By Matt Benson g OCALA, FL, MAR. 4 uebec's Steve Tucker came away from AHRMA's season-opening national MX with a pair of wins on hi s BSA thumper. Cha llenge by AJS Stormer-mounted Dan Johns in both races, Tu cker posted 1-1 moto finishes in Premier Lightweight 11 and Premier 500 II Expert. Some 350 entries were treated to a well-prepared, vintage-friendly circuit. Dust was kept to a minimum, and the course held up well under the pounding from these heavy old machines. On their first encounter, in Premier 500 11, Johns grabbed the early lead on his 1970 AJS 370. By the second of five lap s, however, Tucker's '67 BSA 441 was out in front for good . In the second mo to, it took Tucker three laps before he took the lead from Johns. Premier Lightweight II saw Tucker on a 1970 BSA 250, chasing Intermediate rider and Mo ntesa-mounted Eric Kraft and making his move for the front spo t on lap three. In moto two, Tucker again had to contend with Johns, who was holding the le a d and this time was aboard a 250 AJS. Johns was more tena cious at hanging onto th e lead , and it wasn't until near the end of the moto iliat Tucker managed to get ou t front to earn another perfect 1-1 score. The Sportsman 250cc Intermediates put on a good show, with New Jersey rider Tony Cavazza taking his 74 KTM to 2-1 finishes for the overall victory. In the first race , Cavazza had to work his way through traffic before moving up to p ut the pressure on leader Robbie Braun. Cava zza' s effo rt, h owever, fell just short at the checkered flag. In moto tw o it was Cavazza hangin g on to th e lead against Braun's challen ges. Consist ency paid off for Maico rid er Benny Dur rou gh in S po r ts ma n 500 Exp ert. The opening mot o s aw KTM rider Barry Higgin s charge up through th e pack and into the lead for the win over Durrough and Ma ico pil ot Gary Rosse . Whil e Higgins didn't make the se co n d moto, Bultaco -mounted Tim Weav er grabbed the top spo t after going out with mechanical problem s in moto on e. Again, it was Durrou gh hangin g onto second, and his 2-2 finishes were good enough to capture the overall. Dick Mann and Rick Doughty put on a b lazing show in the Prem ier 500cc Expert race . Mann, ridin g a 1959 Monark, pushed Do ughty hard th e whole first moto, finally forcing his way into the lead on the hill section on the final lap. The second moto was just as close, although Dou ghty kept Mann from making another late-race move into the lead. As a result, the Gold Star pilot earned the overall win with 2-1 finishes. Mann took the 50+ Expert win wi th 1~ 1 finishes . He didn't earn a trophy in 30+ Intermediate, but Tom France certainly had the crowd on his side. Riding a p urple Honda 750 four-cylinder with a baritone wail that identified where it was on the track at all times, France held off th e pack for three or more lap s each race. In the first rnoto, France failed to cross the finish line, but the second time out he earned a seve n th in th e large field.
