MAR. 4 &R Racing's Will Davis maintained his early points lead in the Florida Flat Track Series when he stormed around Steve Morehead at the halfway point of the St. Au gu stin e Speedw a y half m il e and push ed his Honda RS750 to a tw o-second ad vantage by the end of the main. ':1 owed Steve that one," joked Davis af terw ard . " I' ve been following h im arou nd for a lot of years, and now that my h air is about as thin as his, I might be able to h andle him better ." "Will was fast all night," said Morehead, who he ld on for secon d . "I knew th at my best chance was to get out quick and try to hold him off. That Ho n da was just too fast tonigh t." Former Canadi an Nation al Cha mpi on Chris Evans held down a solid third. "I feel real goo d abou t tonight." he said . "Groove tracks aren' t my forte, and to be able to chase these guys around and s tay cl ose is a good n ight. This is a brand-new bike, engi ne, frame an d all. It really worked tonight." The race was ro un d two of the sevenrace Florida series, an d Davis has a perfeet 40 points to Morehead's 29. A la rge field of 34 750s ' signed in, req uiring six qu alifying heats and three hea ts to get to the 12-man main. Texan Willie McCoy ju mped into the lead in the first heat and was holdi ng Davis off un til Robert Trip p fell har d in tum one bringin g out the red flag. Kris Kiser go t the holesh ot on the rest art but Davis quic kly took over. McCoy h eld second until a late-ra ce tr ip o ff th e groo ve dropped him to fou rt h behind Ian Segedy and Paul Morgan. . The second heat also needed a restart when Steve Beattie had a mounting bolt w ork lo o se o n h is oil filt er and h e d u m pe d o il in turn s o ne and tw o . Georgie Price fell very hard and the race w as d e lay e d to cle an th e .track . The restart go t under w ay witho u t Price, w h il e Bre t t Land e s an d Te d Ta yl o r dropped ou t wi th mechanical problems. Morehead retook the lead on the res tart with Dave Camlin hot on h is heels. Scott Stump w orked awa y from th e large p a ck to ta ke a soli d thi rd. Joe Ko p p edged Beattie for the last transfer spot. Th e last he a t was all Evans' as he held off the repeated challenges of Rod ney Farris and Kevin Varnes. Farris and Va rnes battled ea ch other to the end wi th Farris getting the nod. Mike Hacker held off James Hart for the last main event ticket. The 750cc main was also red-flagged when Hacker fell in tum one. The running order had Davis leading Farri s and Morehead, bu t a complete restart was in order. Morehea d got the jump this time and pulled a slick bloc k-pa ss on Davis in tum one. Morehead wo uld lea d the first four laps, but Davis' Hond a was just too much and he took over for good at the halfw ay flags . "I showed him a wheel a couple of times on th e inside , he m oved d own and I got a goo d d rive arou nd the ou tside in three," said Davis. The race for third was a dandy with Evans, Farris, Camlin and Varnes run ning whee l to wheel. Vames lost a chain with tw o la p s to go, a n d Fa r ris a nd Camlin followed Evans across the line. Rich King d ominated the 600cc main, leaving Davis to fend off Hacker. Ken Coolbe th Jr . ran a lone ly fourth well ah ead of Charlie Orr and Willie McCoy. A Pro-A m I Amateur program was held d u ring the afternoon and over 130 riders signed in . The 600cc Pro-Am was A (Left)Steve Morehead (42) and Will Davis (partially hidden) battled neck and neck for the 750cc main event laurels at St. Augustine Speedway. Davis found his way around Morehead to capture his second stra ight win In the Aorlda Aat Track Series.
