Superbike . racer Dale Quarterley is back on a Ducati, Th e bad news is, once aga in the m ajor factory tea ins hav e overlooked one of the best su pe rbike rid ers in North Am erica. Mr. Qua rterley's efforts at the Road Atlanta WERA Grand National Fi nal ma y have bee n questioned by some, but qu ite fran kly it wa s some of the best racing I've seen in a long time (with credi t to Da v e Sadowski, Mike H arth a n d Michael Martin). Th e last time I -sa w Quarterl ey on a Ducati was on the Daytona ban king. He w as p ulling w hee li es o n th e Du cati (straigh t u p) while on the West Banking; incred ible stuff. I never saw an y pho tos of this feat, but I'm interested if anyone has so me. I look forward to again seei ng Dale on a Ducati at Daytona " for the N ASB opener an d again for th e Daytona 200. It 's always great to w atch a rider w ho gives 100 pe rcent. This time the camera will be ready. Greg Flagg Orlando, FL Unf ortunately, Quarterl ey didn't get his new Ducatis in time for the NA SB opener which was held on March 5. He did, however, fini sh 10th in the Daytona 200 on March 12 in his debut on the 916...Editor. Rex has soul I h a v e rec ently e x p erience d a very u niq u e si tu a tion that I w ould like to share with the readers of Cycle News. I am a professional road racer but my grass roots of m otorcycle co mpetition goes back to m ot ocros s. I st ill ra ce mo tocross and m y love for m y C R250 an d motocross co mpetition is still very import a n t to m y moto r cycl e ra ci ng car eer. This p ast w eekend, I was working the C in cinnati trad e s h o w fo r EBC Brakes' H arley-Davidson di vision. Mike Kidd's arenacross was also running d uring the w eeken d. On Saturday evenin g I was in vited to spectate th e arenacross with no ne othe r than " Rocket " Rex Staten. Let me say that Rocket Rex is a firs t- class in d ivid u al. He was very easy to talk to, and he shared many exciting and personal racing stories with me. He was also very interested in my road ra cing in v o lvem en t a nd career acc omplishme nts . His suc cess, numero us race wins a nd cha m pio n s h ip s pea k for th e mse lves; however, a true champion a lso . must have a good-soul, Rocket Rex has all of th e se fi ne qu ali t ies and mo re because h e is 40-y ears -old and s till roosting to victory. Scott Zampach Milwaukee, Wisconsin Paying your dues As a ri der, a reporter fo r lh e Texas Champions hip H ar e Scramble Series; a for mer president of the Trail Riders of Hous ton, and as an avid ad mirer of the musical talen ts of Lyle Lovett and the' acting s kills o f Ju lia Robe rts , I can ap p la ud th ese famous personalities for ventu rin g in to the public. I don't feel these individ uals w ere treat ed 'u nfairly at th e recent scrambles se ries round at Ft. Hood (Texas). No one was d iscourteous, as kin g only for an autograph and expecting equal friend liness. Would they have been treated this nicely at an airport or a restaurant? Where were these people on Saturday night w hen socializing occ urs at these and similar events? These people could not ea rn the living that th ey d o w ithout their ad mi ring public. If every one s topped going to Lyl e Lo vett concerts and stop ped buying his reco rdings, how long wo uld he last? If fans stopped going to Julia Roberts' mo vies and rentingvid eos of her pa st epics, ho w long wou ld H oll ywood have a n in te rest in he r? The ad miring fans of fam ous people ha ve the' righ t to h onor their hero es. Celebrities have the d uty to repay those who have made them wha t they are. . My wife, Te rry; offe red th is suggestion: If Ms . Roberts w ants privacy at an eve nt let her work at the scoring table. It ' s off limit s a nd in the he art of rac e activity. As soon as the news wears off, Mr . and Mrs. Love tt will be no differen t than Jeff Russell, Scott Summers, Rodney Smith or Randy" Hawkins showing up at a local eve nt. I suggest that Mr. Lovett visit his fans at Satu rday night campfires and bench racing sessions, then he' ll be only ano the r rider on Sunday. Our family and friends look forward to seeing Mr. and Mrs. Lovett at future even ts. Bob Windham Te xas Cit y, Te xas Don't hold your breath, Bob. You probably won't be seeing the Lovett s too soon. While, riding in Baja, Mexico, recently, Mr . crashed and broke hi s Lovett eollarbone...Editor. Making a difference On behalf of Egleston Children 's H ospital in Atlanta, Georgia, I would like to say th anks to all the rid ers who paid a visi t to the children o n Feb ru ary 24 . Th ey really enjo yed meeting th e riders and recei v ing the poste rs and a utograp hs . All da y there w as tal k of how much fun th ey h ad 'a nd many of the child ren hung th eir posters and pennants on th e walls . How wonderf ul it was to see such fierce compe titors com e toge ther in s u ch a 'p osi tive manner. They d id such an incredible job interacting w ith the patients. Visits such as these d o mak e a difference and let ou r famil ies know the y ar e not alon e and they have the concern and su p po rt of others. We app reciate th e rid ers ' interest in th e children in our community, especially the chi ld ren who are patien ts at Egleston Children 's H ospital. Tha nks again to all of the gu ys who came out and for the unity they di splayed w hen visiting the child ren. Juli e A.
